Got him - pit bull owner arrested

A MAN has been taken into custody in connection with a dog killing incident that went viral over the holidays.

The Bahamas Humane Society had previously offered a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the man who filmed and encouraged a canine, which appeared to be a pit bull, to kill a smaller dog.

The police said Tuesday: “You may have seen a video circulating on social media of a white pit bull dog that killed another dog. Thanks for your assistance, the assistance of Animal Control, Bahamas Humane Society and members of the public, police have taken an adult male, the owner of that pit bull, into custody.”

Kim Aranha, president of the BHS, told The Tribune yesterday many people contacted the group with tips. The person who got it right will anonymously reap the reward.

Despite the public’s reaction to the incident, the long-time BHS president said she is not pleased with the state of animal rights in the country.

“We have laws at work but people are not taking animal cruelty seriously,” she said. “We want to form a large animal cruelty group to sensitise the nation to the fact that animals do suffer, do feel pain, do experience most of the emotions that we do and probably the thing people will respond to the most is the fact that invariably animal cruelty is a stepping stone to spousal abuse, child abuse and other kinds of abuse. Once people start enjoying cruelty to small animals, after a while they will want to move on and go to somebody else. If people don’t want to take it seriously on the animal side they should take it seriously on the human side. It’s a symptom of a larger problem.”

The dog killing video went viral on social media late last week. The three-minute, two-second-long clip shows the larger dog viciously attacking and biting the neck of the smaller, brown dog and dragging it into the sea while the smaller dog screams and yelps.

The man filming the video praises the attack and claims that this is not the first dogfight the pit bull has won.

The footage begins with the man appearing to call the dog “Shawn.”

“Kill Shawn, kill boy,” he says.

The attacking dog methodically attacks his victim and every 30 seconds or so the man can be heard encouraging him on.

“Kill boy, kill. Kill boy,” he says. Eventually: “Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill.”

At the end, the dog stands over the lifeless body of his victim which he has dragged out of the sea to lay on a rock.

The dog can clearly be seen wearing a black collar with silver studs.

“Good boy, good boy. He kill that one, he kill that one,” says the man off camera. “That’s four under the belt. ‘Cause yesterday that was the third one, yeah. And today a fourth one.”

Dog fighting is illegal under the Animal Protection Act.

You realize this is a "crime" by the tree huggers' standards, right?

They showed up en mass on Kim Aranha's Facebook page to pledge donations to help to catch the killer of a dog.

A person gets killed and mums the words. Only in the 242!

I think you'll find animal cruelty is a crime in **every single civilised country in the entire world**.

I’m sure this is not the same Humane Society that were called about a stray dog having 10 puppies that were wandering in the road and they told the caller to go in the bush and collect the puppies and bring them in because they had no one to come out and get them.

You realise that the humane society is a volunteer organization right?

It gets zero assistance from government, runs on donations, and can barely stay afloat due to the animal cruelty and pet owner ignorance rife in The Bahamas. (And, clearly, the ignorance of people like yourself)

So, unless you are running a massive overworked, underfunded charity organization with no support from anyone other than a handful of donors and people who work full time for little or no pay, I’d suggest you take your whining a$$ elsewhere.

The reality is that this is just one symptom of a dysfunctional society caused by the increase of single parent homes. While there are those who talk about the dog that was killed, hat about children born to single parents who are emotionally and physically abused, deprived of the love and sensitivity that they deserve? It is the lack of proper parental guidance that causes young people to grow up hardened and lacking the skills they need to live in a civilized world, but nobody wants to address the root issues. We have slack unruly, cold blooded young people in our country because of the failure of adults to raise their children properly-- simple!
Bet this young man is one of those children and probably smokes marijuana as well!

Sensible children are the result of a lot of hard work and training. Too many want children but are not prepared to do what is necessary to make them fit to live among decent people!!

Acceptance of violence as the norm and a disregard for all life?

Which stems from a lack of moral standards and boundaries being taught in the home.

And usually starts with 'tree hugger' things like animal cruelty, which devalues life of all types.

Not 1 cent bounty for murdering people but $3,000.00 pledged immediately for the killing of a dog!

Kim Aranha, president of the BHS and their crew conveniently turn a blind eye, not having one peep to say about Haitians hosting chicken fights all over the country.

Who set these priorities? How come Haitians get a free pass from Kim Aranha and BHS? Doesn't chickens lives matter as much as a dog?

Do you have a dog? I mean a dog that you care for, not just letting them roam about in the neighborhood. They're like your babies, literally. You have to do everything for them. People who don't have pets wont understand the bond. At no point is there a thought that your pet is more important than a human life, "but", it's your baby. I've never owned a pet chicken so I don't know if there's a similar thing, but if it ran to meet you when you got home, followed you around and picked up sticks waited to get a pat on the beak...I guess you could build a bond.

SP says...

**YES!** I do have a pampered "baby" pooch in my house that controls both coaches', demands frequent walks, belly rubs, air conditioning and "runs to meet me for doggie snacks" whenever I walk in the door!

What does that have to do with Haitians illegal cockfights being ignored by Kim Aranha and BHS?

ThisIsOurs says...

Oh good. What does it have to do with it? You asked why were they concerned about dogs and not chickens. I said basically I've never had a pet chicken so I don't know if you bond with them like you do with a pet dog. If so there must be some chicken lovers around here somewhere willing to speak up. But this group don't have no pet chickens. Please don't ask me about cows and horses :-/

Her ilk have already proven that they do not care much for coloured people ...... on this blessed MLK day, let us all remember the Golden Rule........ I will bet my last pinky toe that the pit bull owner was a coloured person who was trying to make a FB hustle ....... such a sad case.

@ hrysippus....Very strange that "ThisIsOurs" post assumed that I am a black Bahamian that couldn't possibly "grasp" the bond between dogs and humans were not considered racist!

You obviously believe only white people can appreciate the love of animals, always simultaneously conveniently forgetting that Caucasians decimated American Indians and western civilizations, stole their countries wealth, continue to destroy the African continent, poison the planet, wage nonsensical wars and get away scott free murdering millions of people with food and medicines that do more harm than good and are the undisputed leaders of corruption peddling globally!

You people talk loud about saving the whales, dolphins, dogs, elephants, big cats, turtles, birds etc' but never utter a word about saving your fellow human being because of the color of his skin or origin.

How asinine and hateful is that? **STFU**

ThisIsOurs says...

Lol. I did not assume that you are a black Bahamian who doesn't understand the bond between dogs and humans. Why would you "assume" that? It would be ridiculous since I myself am a hard foot black Bahamian who loves dogs and I have hard foot friends and family who also love dogs. I made my statement based on the fact that your original statement about chickens and dogs seemed ..well... Clueless about the bond anyone can have with pets...

As to not "saying a word about fellow Bahamians being killed", I've seen many here who are decrying the humane society for caring about an animal, celebrating when a young man is shot and killed by the police. Gods first task to man was, take care of the trees, his second was, take of the animals, then and only then did he allow them to be fruitful and multiply.

Economist says...

The Humane Society is there to protect animals, that what it was formed for and that is what it is doing.

John and Sheeprunner, many have donated to Crime Stoppers as well. That organization has helped bring many a criminal to justice.
