CONSTRUCTION on the $42 million IMAX-centred Fusion Superplex will today "ramp up" to 24 hour shifts, with the all-Bahamian investor group behind the project eyeing an April 20 opening.

Dominic Richards, the Atavus Group's chief operating officer, said the 24 hour shifts will ensure the project meets the target opening, adding that several issues have had to be overcome during build-out.

"The perception is that we are a movie theatre when we are a family entertainment facility. We want to make sure we create environments where families can come, feel safe and have something to do," Mr Richards told the Rotary Club of West Nassau.

The 100,000 square foot complex, which is currently being built at the junction of Gladstone Road and JFK Drive, is expected to create 350 jobs according to Mr Richards.

"People may look and say that's a big number, but if you want to do the job right you have to have people you need. We don't want to have people standing around waiting for service. We believe the best way to maintain longevity is to build the relationship and show people that you respect their time," said Mr Richards, adding that the recruitment drive was now winding down.

Mr Richards said the Fusion Superplex will house nine theatres with IMAX Laser and 4DX technology, as well as VIP areas and businesses such as Starbucks, the SubZero ice cream franchise, a soft play children's playground, arcade, restaurant and multiple event venues.

The Atavus Group has been working to bring the concept to realty since 2005. At full capacity the facility can hold 3,000 people at once.

Mr Richards said the group has already obtained government approval to expand northern Gladstone Road from two lanes to four, given the need to improve traffic flow in the area.

This, he said, will come at a cost of $1.7 million. Mr Richards added the group intends to use the facilities for educational purposes, pointing out that IMAX threatres educate as well as entertain.
