THE CAMPERDOWN Equestrian Centre teemed with energy last weekend as parents and teachers from schools across New Providence crowded ringside to cheer on their teams in the Bahamas Interschool Equestrian League's first show of the year.

25 riders competed in six teams, representing Lyford Cay International School, Queens College, St Andrew's School, Tambearly School, Windsor Preparatory School, and an Independent team comprised of St Augustine's College, Summit Academy and homeschooled students.

The show was judged by Jane Dow-Burt, a 'R' licenced USEF judge and President of the Westbrook Hunt Club in Westbrook, Connecticut.

Teams and coaches gathered in suspense at the beginning of the competition to learn which horses had been "drawn" by each rider.

At BIEL interschool competitions horses and riders are matched by random draw, the same procedure that is followed for NCAA and IHSA collegiate competitions.

"I love it," said Gabi Moran of St Andrew's School. "It's so much fun to have the chance to ride horses from other barns, and it tests your skill as a rider."

Riders cheered and praised each other, even team rivals.

The show of sportsmanship drew the admiration of Judge Dow-Burt, who commended the riders for their positive attitudes.

At the end of the day the teams lined up proudly to receive their ribbons.

Lyford Cay International School was the winning team, followed by St Andrew's School in second place and Queen's College in third.

Windsor Preparatory School and the Independent team tied for fourth place, followed by Tambearly School in sixth.

The next interschool equestrian competition will be held at Camperdown Equestrian Centre on April 28.

Admission is free and the public is welcome.
