Bahamian island hits the jackpot

THE purchase of a Bahamian private island was among the uses suggested for the $559.7 million won in the US Powerball Jackpot.

In an 'NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt' segment that aired on January 3 about the Powerball Jackpot, reporter Joe Fryer had a suggestion for how the lucky winner can spend a portion of their winnings: Purchase an island in the Bahamas. Or, more specifically, Deep Water Cay.

Located on the eastern end of Grand Bahama and just 130 miles from the coast of Florida, Deep Water Cay is a 91-acre island that comes complete with a private 4,200-foot airstrip, three beaches and 2.5 miles of coastline.

"The island is legendary for its bonefish fishing, but this is not your run-of-the-mill 'fishing village'," said George Damianos, president and managing broker for Damianos Sotheby's International Realty.

"Over the years the resort has become a private escape for public figures and celebrities like Tom Brokaw and Liam Neeson."

In addition to the marina that also has three separate docks, the resort island offers three cottages with seven rooms, four residences, a two-storey clubhouse and 54 developable single-family lots directly on the ocean.

"I am not surprised this property was featured on NBC as a 'wish list purchase'," Mr Damianos said.

"Between the world-class bonefishing and the five-star quality amenities, Deep Water Cay is anyone's idea of a dream come to life. Not only is the resort ultra-private, but it offers the modern comforts and conveniences necessary to make it a highly-desirable destination."

Damianos Sotheby's has the listing for the island.
