FOLLOWING the final fight of his career, Meacher Major has moved forward with his Major Pain Promotions and Entertainment company as they prepare to honour a Bahamian boxing icon next year.
The organisation, in conjunction with the Pan American Caribbean Boxing Organisation, announced plans for the inaugural Fred Sturrup Boxing event to be hosted on March 16, 2019 in Freeport, Grand Bahama.
Major also serves as the regional director for PACBO.
"I feel it's an overdue acknowledgement to honour Mr Sturrup in a way by hosting a event in his name, that can carry on over the years.
"Mr Sturrup is one of the founding fathers of boxing in the Bahamas that has helped the sport so much, and we feel that a person like himself needs to be recognised for all he has done for the sport and continues to do," he said. "Being the regional director for PACBO and now retired from fighting, I can fully focus on the development of boxing in the Bahamas in a way we have never done before. I am grateful to God for an opportunity that we can honour Mr Sturrup. I have a great supporting team around me that understands my passion for the sport of boxing and offered to assist me in helping the sport grow throughout the Bahamas."
Sturrup was recently elected to serve a second stint as president of the Commonwealth Boxing Council. His first tenure was 2008-2010.
"There will be amateur matches, featuring fighters from Freeport, Nassau, Abaco and hopefully we can get Inagua to bring some boxers. We also anticipate one pro bout and a special surprise for the local Freeport crowd," Major said.
"It's going to be a great night of boxing, with some entertainment to honour Mr Sturrup in a way that he should be."
