Giants at the double

The New Providence Basketball Association championship series continued in both Division I and Division II.

Both series will continue with game fives Friday at 8pm at the AF Adderley Gymnasium.

Giants lead series 3-1

The defending champions are one win away from retaining their title led by a standout performance from D’Shon Taylor, capped by his late game winning jumper.

Coming out of a timeout, Taylor got the ball in the short corner and hit a baseline jumper for the go-ahead field goal with five seconds left to as the Giants took the closest game of the series. He led the team with 37 points and shot an efficient 13-18 from the field, including 3-5 from three-point range.

Michael Bain Jr finished with 24 points and also had a hot shooting day 10-16 from the field. He also added six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Tehran Cox scored 14 while Jackson Jacob added 10 points.

The Stingers got a pair of double doubles from Eugene Bain and Salathiel Dean. Bain finished a team high 20 points and 11 rebounds while Dean had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Randy Williams finished with 19 points while Brian Bain finished with 16 points.

The Giants took a 19-17 lead at the end of the first quarter and the teams played to a 47-47 tie at the half.

The Stingers opened the third quarter with a pair of three pointers from Brian Bain to take an early six point lead. The Giants responded with an 8-0 run and went ahead 56-53 on a Michael Bain layup with 6:15 left in the peiod. Dean would bring an end to the Giants run with his layup. The Giants led by as much as seven in the period and eventually took a 75-70 lead into the fourth. The Stingers opened another quarter on a 6-0 run to take the lead on a Williams jumper. The opened up a 10 point lead at the 3:20 mark when Bain made a three pointer to make the score 90-80. Trailing 93-84, the Giants went on an 11-0 run, capped by a Jacob three pointer to lead 95-93 with 1:22 left to play. Williams would tie the game at 95 with his jumper at the 30 second mark, setting the stage for Taylor’s heroics.

Series ties 2-2

The Giants trailed by three with less than one minute left to play and closed the game on a 6-0 run to even the series.

Cameron Strachan led the Giants with 20 points and 12 rebounds, Adrian Thompson scored 13, while Anderias Black and Andre Calvert each finished with 12.

Johnanthan Johnson led five High Flyers in double figures with 17 points. Jeremy Neely scored 15, Dave Davis had a double double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, Shanton Pratt scored 14 and Justin Gardiner added 10.

Thompson split a pair at the line, Calvert followed with a three and Strachan added late free throws to seal the win.

Johnson had an opportunity to tie it late, but his three pointer missed off the front rim.

The Giants outrebounded the High Flyers 58-47, held a 10 point advantage in points in the paint (44-34), and a 13 point advantage on second chance points (23-10). They also scored 49 points off the bench while the High Flyers managed just 16.
