Who’s in, who’s out? Carifta team named

The BAAAs ratified a 50-member team to represent the country at the 48th CARIFTA Track and Field Championships.

The 2019 meet will be hosted April 20-22nd in the Cayman Islands at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex over the Easter Weekend.

The U20 Boys lead the list of qualifiers with 18, while the U17 Girls and U 20 Girls each field 11, and the U17 Boys comprise 10 qualifiers.

The Bahamas will be out to improve on his second place finish at last year’s games here at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium where the team collected 35 medals, including six gold, 14 silver and 15 bronze.

Jamaica tightened its stranglehold of the title with 44 gold, 27 silver and 11 bronze for a total of 82 medals. Trinidad & Tobago was third with 17 medals, including four gold, six silver and seven bronze.

Approxiamately 40 student athletes qualified ahead of last weekend’s CARIFTA Trials, but team Bahamas had their final opportunity to perform at home, reach qualifying standards and vie for roster spots.

Anthaya Charlton was one of the meet’s top performers and won three events, each at the qualifying standard in the Girls U17 division. She took first in the 100m with her time of 12.04 secs, the 100m Hurdles in 14.96 secs and the Long Jump at 5.47m.

Terrence Jones also reached the necessary standards in both the U20 Boys 400m and 200m.

Jones took the 400m in 47.58 secs ahead of Marckenson Joseph 48.03 secs along with Tre Buchannan in 48.27 secs and Raymond Oriakhi in 48.53 secs.

In the U20 Girls 400m, Megan Moss took first place in 53.06 secs.

In the 200m, Jones took first place in 21.05 secs. Rico Moultrie was second in 21.43 secs and Adrian Curry was third in 21.46 secs.

The top four finishers in the U20 Boys 100m all reached qualification. Curry took first place in 10.44 secs, followed by Moultrie at 10.51 secs, Joel Johnson was third at 10.52 secs and Ure Mills at 10.60 secs.

In the U17 Boys 1500m, Mitchell Curtis took first place in 4:21.60 secs ahead of Omar Kelly Jr in 4:27.88 secs as both surpassed the qualification mark of 4:29.35 secs. Curtis also won the 3000m in 9:26.97 secs to easily surpass the standard of 9:42.21 secs

The U17 Girls 1500m also produced a pair of qualifiers in Akaya Lightbourne’s 5:09.94 secs and Jodie Ritchie’s 5:12.26 secs

Matthew Thompson ran 51.62 secs in the U20 Boys 400m Hurdles to surpass the standard of 52.72 secs while Jasmine Knowles did the same in the U 20 Girls 800m in 2:14.70 secs to surpass the standard of 2:18.35 secs.

Top four of the U20 Boys High Jump all reached the qualifying standard of 2.00m. Shaun Miller took first at 2.10m, followed by Travis Joseph at 2.05m with Tyler Missicka and Benjamin Clarke both at 2.00m.

In the U17 Boys High Jump Stephan Farquharson took first at 1.90m while the U17 Girls High Jump Shaunece Miller 1.65m.

Several athletes qualified in the Javelin led by the U20 Boys with, Michelangelo Bullard (62.79m) and Hughie Rolle (60.61m). In the U17 Boys event, Keyshawn Strachan qualified at 56.45m while in the U17 Girls, Rhema Otabor was first at 41.86m.

In the U20B Long Jump, Denvaughn Whymns was first at 7.35m while Mateo Smith won the U17 Boys at 6.36m.,
