Record year - 'seven million visitors'

TOURISM Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar predicts that 2019 will feature a record-breaking seven million visitors coming to The Bahamas.

His statement came during the opening night of the Free National Movement’s youth convention at the Melia resort yesterday.

“If you pass me in the hallways of this convention or conversely out on the streets of Freetown and you want to give me a new nickname, may I suggest you say, ‘Hey one million more man!’,” he said.

A record 6.6 million foreign visitors came to The Bahamas last year.

“Stopover visitor arrivals will achieve a new record in 2019,” Mr D’Aguilar said. “Cruise passenger arrivals will achieve a new record in 2019. Arrivals in New Providence will achieve a new record in 2019. Arrivals into the Family Islands will achieve a new record in 2019.”

Mr D’Aguilar also revealed that his ministry hired 25 “young people” this month after he grew concerned about the lack of youth at the institution.

He did not say what void the new workers were hired to fill. He said not only do young people comprise a small part of the ministry’s workforce, but they are also the most likely to resign.

He said: “Do you know when I took over the Ministry of Tourism, a manpower audit revealed that just five percent of the staff, five percent of the Ministry of Tourism staff were under the age of 30? No lie! That’s what the PLP left in place. Five percent of the staff were young like you all. And get this: 95 percent of the resignations were also under the age of 30. So what that tell young people? First, we ain’t into you and if you should manage to get in, we ga do our best to run you.

“As such, when I saw that only five percent of the Ministry of Tourism staff were under the age of 30, I said no, no, no t’ings gotta change! So we went on a recruitment drive and just this month we hired 25 young people into the Ministry of Tourism. We were blown away by their exceptional talent, ingenuity, creativity, enthusiasm and qualifications. Let me tell you that the future success of the Ministry of Tourism is secured by these new young Bahamians coming on board.”

In 2017 Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis announced a freeze on hiring in the public service. Department heads were subsequently told there would be no new hires in the service unless there is a critical need, and even then applications would have to be approved by Cabinet. It is unclear when the hiring freeze was lifted.

Education Minister Jeff Lloyd also spoke during last night’s convention. He praised the Minnis administration’s investments in education, including the expanded access to free tuition for University of the Bahamas students.

For their part, youth speakers praised the administration’s efforts to strengthen the economy, noting GDP increases, a recent decline in the unemployment rate and efforts to impose greater prudence on government spending.

When he spoke last night, Carlyle Bethel, head of the FNM’s Torchbearers Association, sought to differentiate the FNM from the PLP and highlighted the role the youth organisation has had in producing government officials over the years, citing past and current officials like Tommy Turnquest, Kwasi Thompson, Don Saunders, Rickey Mackey and Jamal Moss.

“FNM elected young Bahamians to Parliament such as Travis Robinson and James Albury,” he said. “PLP does not get its MPs from the (Progressive) Young Liberals. They use young Bahamians at election time and if they win, the old guard swoops in to get all the appointments and all the contracts. That is the PLP mindset!”

This smuck refuses to sit down and write President Trump a thank you note. Instead he chooses to smugly take credit for something he had absolutely nothing to do with, i.e. the turn-around of the U.S. economy that began in January 2017. This guy is a most deceitful little white-haired (albeit balding) yapping poodle! LMAO

actually the turn around in the U S economy started long before 2017 but don,t let your bias and Faux news facts get in the way ..Its been one of the longest economic growth in U S history .Under President Obama the unemployment rate went from about 9% to just over 4% and the market went from about 8 thousand to 22000 .Trumped pulled the biggest middle class tax payer paid for stimulus ever , the tax cuts for the wealthy. and is now running trillion dollar deficets in a "good " economy .The last time deficets were this high was when Bush did the tarp and Obama did the stimulus in the height of the recession . Numbers don't lie after the U S got out of the recession Obama was running half the deficits Trump is . Although the trade war w China might be needed it has basically turned the wealthy farmers into even wealthier framers w taxpayer money while the small farmers are going out of business .Facts don,t bother you ,you cut the cloth to suit your bias ,

U.S. national debt was $12 trillion when Obama took office and was $21 trillion when he left office 8 years later with no tax breaks for U.S. corporate and individual taxpayers. Obama was content to have the Federal Reserve drop helicopter money all over the place leaving President Trump stuck with the bill. Trump has cut taxes and beefed up U.S. military strength while avoiding conflicts around the world and bringing U.S. troops back home. We won't see Trump pissing away $500 billion like Obama did with the Solyundra scandal. Despite the helicopter money, year-on-year growth of the U.S. economy was anemic at best under Obama. Trump changed all of that and D'Aguilar is basking in Trump's success. You can be rest assured, the balding poodle will not hold himself responsible when our tourist numbers com way down in the event of a U.S. recession. LMAO

A skilled reporter would've asked the Minister about his contribution to the increasing figures.

more specifically - since assuming office - what has he done that contributed to improving numbers?

Brought those cronies home that had jobs all over the globe in tourism offices doing nothing,, and used that money to expand our tourism product on the internet with firms that know internet marketing , Got us better ad agengies like the one that did the Lenny Kravitz commercial ,instead of the the previous bunch that picked the agency by how big a kick back they can get ..No the FNM is not perfect but compared to the PLP and 500 million walking right out the front door of BOB I will take the FNM ..

"A record-breaking seven million visitors coming to The Bahamas" and there is still marginally NOTHING for them to do here!

Where are the native shows, night clubs, dinner shows, day trips, etc?

The only reason the Bahamas is flourishing and has succeeded to date in tourism is our proximity, and the tourist feels more comfortable, safer and can move about freely without being hassled here than many other competing destinations.

TOURISM Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar has absolutely **no clue** what caused the increase! He needs to admit his ignorance and find ways of increasing in-resort spend by encouraging Bahamians to get involved in new innovative ventures to provide new tours, excursions and entertainment for visitors.

Stop the blah, blah, blah, and get to work!!
