DAVIS Cupper Donte Armbrister picked up his opening victory in the International Tennis Federation’s Trinidad Summer Bowl yesterday in Trinidad & Tobago.

Armbrister, the No.4 seeded player, pulled off a 6-2, 6-4 victory over American Farzan Amiri in the first round of the main draw.

Armbrister, one of two Bahamians playing in the tournament, is slated to be back in action today when he takes on American Grant Lumkong in the second round of singles.

Armbrister will also team up with Freddie Ridout in their first round match in doubles. The duo, seeded No.3, will take on the Trinidad & Tobago combo of Sebastian Byng and Nicolas Ready.

Sydney Clarke, coming off her victory in her last tournament, got a bye in the first round in singles. As the top seeded player, Clarke will face American Morgan McCarthy in the second round today.

Ironically, Clarke and McCarthy will have to regroup, win or lose, to team up to play in the first round of the women’s doubles against Trinidad & Tobago’s tandem of Aralia Blackman and Kryshelle Cudjoe.

Clarke, as the top seed, got eliminated in the semi-final in the girls’ singles, but she teamed up with Mia Yabuta of Japan to win the doubles title.

Armbrister, seeded No.3, also participated in the boys’ singles where he was ousted in the second round. He didn’t participate in doubles.

This is the third consecutive tournament on the Caribbean tour for both Armbrister and Clarke.

The two 17-year-olds started the tour in St Lucia and will end it next week in Trinidad & Tobago.
