Is PLP pro-gay?

EDITOR, The Tribune.

BAHAMIANS mustn’t put too much stock into a Nassau based downmarket tabloid newspaper, which recently asserted that there is currently an ongoing intramural feud between heterosexuals and homosexuals in the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP).

Bahamians must give the PLP the benefit of the doubt that the there is absolutely no merit to the said allegations, especially in light of the party’s decades old tradition of holding prayer breakfast meetings during convention and in engaging Christian ministers.

The PLP is deeply rooted in the Baptist fundamentalist tradition. Remember, it was the late Dr Harcourt W Brown, pastor of the historic Bethel Baptist Church, who assisted the fledgling PLP during the 1960s for the achievement of Majority Rule. Still, with our penchant for engaging in deductive reasoning, the PLP troika of Philip Brave Davis, Chester Cooper and Fred Mitchell should issue a formal statement regarding their political organisation’s position on the LGBT matter. Is the PLP pro-gay or not? Inquiring minds want to know. Is it high time that the ongoing LGBT speculations are laid to rest.
