NPBA: Giants continue undefeated streak in Division I

THE Commonwealth Bank Giants continued their undefeated streak in Division I while the Asphalt Maintenance Pirates have won three in a row in Division II in NPBA play Tuesday night.

The Giants improved to 4-0 with a 104-64 win over the Fort Charlotte Defenders at the AF Adderley Gymnasium.

Five Giants finished in double figures led by Eugene Bain’s 19 points and nine rebounds.

Adam Johnson also scored 19, D’Shon Taylor scored 13, Michael Bain Jr finished with 12 points, five steals and four assists and Antwan Bevans scored 10.

Gregory Seymour led the Defenders with 24 points and 19 rebounds - both game highs. Carrington Dean and Clayton Tucker each scored 11.

Seymour scored the game’s first basket, but it was all Giants after that.

Johnson made a three-pointer on the following possession to give the Giants the lead.

It sparked a 15-3 run that saw the Giants take their first 10-point lead of the game on a Johnson dunk.

The Giants went ahead 24-11 at the end of the first and outscored the Defenders by seven in the second to take a 20-point lead at the half (45-25).

The Giants had their highest scoring period of the game with 34 points in the third quarter en route to the blowout win.

The Giants shot 42 per cent from the field on the night and assisted on 25 of their 42 made field goals.

They also outscored the Defenders by 32 on points in the paint and scored 32 points off turnovers.

The Giants lead the John Archer Division at 4-0 while the UB Mingoes lead the Vince Ferguson division at 5-0.

The Pirates used a decisive third quarter run to take control and keyed a 102-90 win over the TMT Giants.

Stephon Johnson led the Pirates with 20 points, five assists and four steals while Valentino Simon finished with a double double - 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Antonio Hanna scored 19 while Kamal Murphy and Uriah Rolle each scored 12.

Randon Swaby led the Giants with 16 points and nine rebounds, Cameron Strachan scored 16 and Taleo Bethel scored 14 and Devon Bonaby added 12.

A back and forth first quarter that featured several ties and lead changes saw the Giants take an edge late when Bethel made a pair of layups within the last 30 seconds to give the Giants a 20-18 lead headed into the second.

The Giants held a seven-point lead late into the second quarter (43-36) before Johnson scored four straight for the Pirates and they trailed 43-40 at the half. The Pirates led by as much as nine on two occasions in the third, the latter was when Simon scored a layup with 12 seconds left to lead 74-65 at the end of the quarter.

The lead grew to as much as 14 in the fourth.

After a loss in the opening game of the season, the Pirates look to keep pace in the Godfrey McQuay division at 3-1.

They trail the only undefeated team in the league, Your Essential Store Giants at 4-0.

The Sun Oil Rockets and Leno Eagles Nest both lead the Charles Mackey Division at 3-2.
