Fire closes parts of Bay Street

POLICE have closed a portion of Bay Street as they work to contain a structural fire.

The old Wong’s Food Store has been destroyed by the blaze that began sometime before 5am.

The blaze has also damaged portions of neighbouring buildings, including the third floor of Peter Maynard Attorneys at law office.

Bay Street has been closed between Victoria and Deveaux Streets.

At the scene, Fire Chief Walter Evans commended the high turnout of firefighters as high winds were a major challenge in containing the blaze. All emergency vehicles were needed, according to Mr Evans, who added off duty fire staff were also requested for duty.

That's one way to start the 'revitalization' of the eastern end of Bay Street! Good thing the fire-fighters managed to contain it.

And what is the new height restriction they want for the new Bay Street buildings? Maybe with an undated fire/emergency code as well.

Yes, or no - Bay Street between Victoria and Deveaux Streets has long been in closure for business and maintenance phases - going back to year 1905, when Comrade "Sister Bay Street Boys" Queen Victoria posed for her Statue be erected Parliament Square.
