The track and field season is heating up and as our collegiate athletes continue to make their marks on the indoor tracks and impress their coaches, local athletes are also pushing each other in fierce competitions as the BAAAs club competitions continue.

Tomorrow, the action will be at the Roadrunners 13th Annual Diana Lynn Thompson Track and Field Classic. The competition begins at 9.30am and meet directors are looking forward to a day of exciting competition as athletes continue to reach for the CARIFTA qualifying standards in their events.

According to Roadrunners head coach Dexter Bodie, there are just over 1,000 athletes registered to compete. This number includes approximately 56 track and field clubs and various unattached athletes.

“Although most of the clubs are from Nassau, there will also be four clubs from Grand Bahama, one from Andros and one from Abaco,” Bodie said. “The island teams are looking to blow away the competition so matchups will be very exciting.”

Additionally there are a number of primary and high schools participating as they seek to prepare their athletes for upcoming inter-school competitions.

With the support of Summit Insurance as a bronze sponsor, the Roadrunners are expecting a well run and smooth meet.

“Having been formed in 1999 by the late Diana Lynn Thompson, the club seeks to keep this event consistent on the athletic calendar in tribute to Thompson and as a means to ensure that development opportunities continue for the youth of our country,” Bodie said.

While the club itself will be busy hosting its meet on Saturday, they will also be cheering on two of its athletes who travelled on Tuesday to represent the country at the NACAC Cross Country Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Anthon Pratt and Jackson Ozias, both of Roadrunners Track Club, came out on top at the recently held BAAA Cross Country Fitness test and will see action on Saturday. They travelled with head coach David Ferguson.
