Michel grabs victory in Abaco junior championship

ASHLEY Michel, the 2018 FCGA Player of the Year, started the season off with a bang with an overall first-place finish at the 2019 Abaco Junior Golf Championship that was held on Sunday at the lovely Treasure Cay Golf Course.

The 16-year-old student of RM Bailey School, topped a field of 42 juniors with a score of 81. Second and third place finishers were Saketh Hegde from Freeport with a score of 82 and Benjamin Knowles with a score of 86, respectively.

The results in the age division play were as follows:

In the Boys/Girls 6-9 category, first place went to Haley Hall, second was Aden Jones and third was Jalene Bowleg.

In the Girls 10-13 category, first place went to Chemari Pratt, second was Elyse Hanna and third went to Ayshah McDonald.

In the Boys category, first place went to Aiden Gorospe, second was Rhan Miller and third went to Percival Richardson.

In the Girls 14 -15 category, Kyndall Campbell from Freeport was the winner.

In the Boys 14-15 category, first place went to Benjamin Knowles, there was a tie for second place between Zion Taylor and Adrian Stan-Busuioc.

In the Girls 16-18 category, first place went to Ashley Michel, second was Nyah Singh and third went to A’Marie Smith.

In the Boys 16-18 category, first place went to Saketh Hegde, second was Javontae Pinder and third went to Xavier Robinson.

The tournament’s flag for the first event of the year, which goes to the junior golfer with the lowest score, went to Ashley Michel. She finished the day with three birdies and nine pars on her way to capturing the flag.

The junior golfers have a packed tournament calendar this year and most if not all will go straight into the BGF Junior National Championships this weekend from Saturday-Sunday at the Ocean Club Golf Course, Paradise Island.
