Laundromats deserve our support

EDITOR, The Tribune.

The Minister of Tourism seems hell bent on squashing every small independent laundromat on New Providence. Exactly how much is enough? Between the intersection of Blue Hill and Carmichael Roads and Gladstone Road, the minister has constructed three mega laundromats. This has brought the fate of four small family owned laundromats to the brink of failure!

While I fully recognise the minister's right to expand his business as he sees fit, it certainly seems to run counter to his party's theme - It's the People's Time! When combined with the reduction in the rate of duty from 45% to 5% for washers and dryers and parts for washers and dryers, it does not pass the smell test for many.

As a decades long resident of Carmichael I will support the small operations who've always been here for us even when we were just a fledgling community and avoid the conglomerates seeking to destroy them.

You are correct. Bahamians are SLOWLY starting to wake up and realize that elections are not held every 5 years - but in fact are held every single day - every time you open you wallet/purse and take out a dollar and give it to someone or some business. WHO are you giving it to? What is their motive or objective in life? How is that helping society.

Bahamians are starting to realize that saving $3/week (on say laundry) may be costing them hundreds or even thousands of dollars in lost wages, lost jobs, fewer choice, fewer freedoms.

Be careful who you give your sweat and toil slave labour pennies to. You work hard for that. Don't give it to any undeserving persons/

I do not know the situation specifically talked about here - but in general people need to start making more informed choices.

And just think, the corrupt cabinet minister behind the mega laundromats is well known for not to paying anywhere near the full amount of duty due on the goods he imports for the construction, renovation and/or operation of his laundromats. What a joke!
