Junior tennis aces shine on the Florida circuit

A GROUP of young talented Bahamian males took to the junior tennis circuit in Florida this past weekend.

Michael Major Jr and Jackson Mactaggart participated in the under-14 category and Khai Rees and Patrick Mactaggart took part in the under-12 category at the USTA Level 7 championships in Coral Springs.

Major Jr emerged as the champion of the under-14 division. He recorded a shutout match in the round of 16 over Mckinnon 6-0, 6-0. In the quarter-finals, he won in straight sets over Tardio6-3, 7-6.

Major Jr, who was unseeded, defeated the #2 Gusain in the semi-finals in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

Major Jr would then go on to defeat the #3 seedAnzhilov 6-3, 6-2 - once again he wrapped up the win in straight sets to be crowned the champion.

Also participating in this division was Jackson Mactaggart who made it to the quarter-finals.

Jackson played well in the R16, winning easily over Yang 6-3, 6-1. He played well but would go on to lose to the #3 seed Anzhilov 2-6, 3-6 in the quarters.

In the under-12 category, Rees emerged as the champion. He recorded some good wins on his way to the semi-finals.

In the round of 16 he won over the 7th seed Martim 6-0, 6-0 not giving up a game. In the semis, he would win over Amabek 6-1, 6-2.

In the final, Rees defeated the #2 Tristan Dion in three sets 6-7(6), 7-5; 13-11.

Also playing in the U12 was William McCartney and Patrick Mactaggart.

McCartney received a walkover in the round of 32 and later he defeated Riesz 6-2 ,7-5 in the round of 16.

McCartney played well advancing to the quarter-finals where he lost to #2 Dion 0-6,1-6.

Patrick Mactaggart had a good win over Vandenhouten in the round of 32 winning 7-6, 7-6. He would put up a good fight in Round of 16 losing in a close tiebreak set against the #8 seed Pignation 1-6, 6-4 5-10.

In addition, congratulations are also extended to Jackson, Khai and Patrick on their matches won in the tournament.
