Association provides health insurance access solution

An Association has moved to solve the health insurance affordability and accessibility challenges faced by many Bahamian businesses and individuals.

The Western New Providence Association (WNPA) said the January 23, 2020, launch of its group health insurance platform provides member companies, and their employees, with access to previously unattainable coverage and benefits by pooling their risks into a single group.

It added in a statement that it was health insurance costs can sometimes be out of reach for Bahamian businesses, especially micro, small and medium-sized companies, because their staff is too small to qualify. Individuals, too, often find premium rates cost prohibitive when not a part of a group or company policy.

The Association launched its offering at The Old Fort Bay Club. The event attracted Dr Duane Sands, minister of health; Lisa McCartney, educator; and attorney Shannelle Bethell of Mitre Court. Founding and non-founding members were in attendance.

Dr Sands said the WNPA’s platform has the potential to provide greater access to quality healthcare for Bahamians. He added that it sets a precedent for “packaged” insurance and business-related solutions.

The Association said its membership is drawn from a variety of businesspersons including freelancers; graphic designers; construction and development firms; law firms; and utility companies.

Headed by Andrew Symonette, Philip Simon, Patrice Rolle and Dr Dean Tsereotopoulos, the Association said it aims to stimulate the growth of its members by providing them with the necessary resources and services.
