SATURDAY UPDATE: The Ministry of Health has released a new dashboard (main picture) showing four confirmed cases of COVID-19, seven in quarantine and 35 released from quarantine.
The Ministry of Health confirmed one new case of the COVID-19 coronavirus in New Providence on Friday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to four.
In a statement, the ministry said the latest case has been linked to the first confirmed case, who remains in hospital in stable condition and is being managed in isolation.
“On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reported the addition of two confirmed positive cases of COVID-19. Those cases were also contacts of the initial case,” the statement said.
“Health officials continue to follow the condition of the COVID-19 positive cases, three of whom remain in isolation at home and do not require hospitalisation at this time.
“The Ministry of Health has expanded its testing capacity with the addition of 1,000 COVID-19 test kits which arrived on the island today, bringing to 1,750 the total number of test kits available at this time.”
The Ministry said members of the public are reminded to follow the Emergency Powers (COVID-19) Order announced by the Prime Minister to reduce the spread of the virus, including social distancing.
“As part of the efforts to stay safe:
• Stay home if you are feeling ill and having fever and/or respiratory symptoms.
• Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, and then discard it.
• Refrain from touching your face.”
The Ministry will continue to provide regular updates to the public. If no additional cases confirmed, will it be necessary to keep entire country on partial lockdown beyond say Wednesday, even if retail businesses go to a shorter operating schedule. With the tourist sector almost totally disrupted can the country afford to dig a deeper economic ditch. National Insurance claims they can pay workers for the 10 days but can they?

doubt theyd do that. they need 14 days to ensure no new cases. if anyone is ill they should show up in that time span. Unfortunately more people showing up most likely means another extension.

Well many places around the world are extending their lockdown. Italy may keep bars and restaurants closed for six months.

Probably have to wait until a certain amount of time passes with no new cases, before lifting the lockdown.

One thing to be aware of is that a case study of the Diamond Princess cruise ship suggests that almost half of infections result in no symptoms. That means that there are likely many more infections in the general population than have yet been recognised. Their results also suggest that the mortality in the general population may be much less than feared - perhaps less than 0.2%, or 2 deaths per thousand infections. The population on the cruise ship was much older than the average population, especially that of the Bahamas, but even so the death rate was only 1.3%. The probable reason that it has seemed to be so much higher in other countries is that testing has been heavily weighted towards cases with symptoms. In Germany, where random testing has been carried out, the death rate has been found to be 0.3%, which is broadly in line with the Diamond Princess result. Readers might like to compare this with seasonal flu, which shows a death rate of about 0.1%.
