A 20-year-old man who assaulted a police officer and resisted lawful arrest was fined $175.

Police arrested Shawn Butler Jr after he failed to comply with an officer’s orders on February 17.

The prosecution said around 7pm that day, officers were dispatched to Cumberbatch Avenue to investigate a disturbance.

When they arrived on the scene, they found Butler Jr acting in a disorderly manner. When officers asked him to cease, he refused to do so.

Police Constable 3118 Rolle then attempted to arrest the accused, but he pushed the officer away from him.

When Butler Jr was eventually detained, he was taken to a nearby station where he denied the offences.

During his arraignment before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes, Butler Jr pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer, disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest.

He was subsequently fined $100 for count one, $25 for count two and another $50 for count three. If he fails to pay the fines, the accused could risk spending one week in jail.
