Bahamian student athletes are standouts in NAIA baseball

SEVERAL Bahamain student athletes delivered noteworthy performances for their respective programmes over the weekend in National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic (NAIA) baseball play.

Wade Weinburger Jr’s power-hitting display continues to lead his Bryan College Lions to a No.15 national ranking in the polls.

Weinburger hit a grand slam, his team-leading 14th home run of the year, as the Lions swept the weekend series over the St Andrew’s Knights to improve to 25-11 on the season.

The Lions’ offence powered a 19-1 win in game one. They tied a season high for runs and hit a season high .571 batting average and a 1.057 slugging percentage. They also totalled seven home runs and 24 hits.

Weinburger finished 3-5 with three runs scored, three RBI and two stolen bases.

Facing an 0-1 count in the bottom of the sixth, his grand slam delivered the final runs of the game to give the Lions their most lopsided win of the season.

Through 36 games this season, the senior outfielder is hitting .305 with 39 hits, 31 runs scored, 14 home runs, 45 RBI, 85 total bases, slugging .664 with a .361 OBP and eleven stolen bases.

The Lions are fourth in the standings of a loaded Appalachian Athletic Conference which features four nationally ranked programmes.

Also in the AAC, Devyn Munroe and his Truett McConnell Bears have now won six of their last seven games to improve to 18-15.

Munroe hit .250 with two RBI in the Bears’ three-game sweep over Kentucky Christian.

In game one, he went 2-4 with an RBI and a run in an 8-0. Both teams were scoreless until the top of the third inning when Munroe’s single to right produced the game’s first run. Munroe returned in game three to go 1-3 with a run and an RBI.

On the season Munroe is hitting .303 with 33 hits, 28 runs scored, one home run, 17 RBI, 42 total bases, with a .443 OBP and five stolen bases.

The pair went head-to-head April 2-3, when Truett McConnell swept Bryan in a three-game set.

Munroe hit .333 with five runs while Weinburger hit .583 with two runs, two home runs and four RBI.

In the Sun Conference, Dominique Collie Jr and the Webber International Warriors had their highest scoring output of the season to take one game from the No.9 ranked Gwinnett College Grizzlies in their recent three-game set.Collie powered Saturday’s 16-9 win in the back half of a double header when he went 3-6 with four RBI and two stolen bases.

In the third inning, the junior outfielder drew a walk and eventually stole second to get in scoring position. He went on to score on a Bryan Eusebio single to give Webber a 2-1 lead.

Georgia Gwinnett took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth but the Warriors responded with a six run seventh which featured Collie’s a two-RBI single up the middle. He added another two-RBI single in the eighth inning to give his team a 12-7 lead.

After the series, Webber’s record moved to 25-18 overall. Collie is hitting .269 with 35 hits, eight doubles, five triples, 25 runs scored, 35 RBI, slugging .408 with nine stolen bases.
