Lathaniel and Cardinals get at-large bid to NJCAA Division I Nationals

LATHANIEL Bastian and his Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals had their nearly season long win streak come to an end, but still received an at-large bid to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament.

The tournament takes place April 19-24 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The Cardinals are seeded at No.9 and will face the No.24 seed Brunswick Dolphins at 1pm on April 19. The winner will go on to face No. 8 seed Cowley in the second round.

TVCC had their 22-game win streak snapped in a 68-67 loss to Kilgore College in the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament, in Jacksonville, Texas on Saturday. Both losses for the 22-2 Cardinals this season have come against Kilgore.

Bastian finished with three points and five rebounds in the finale.

He opened the tournament with 10 rebounds in the quaterfinals with an 81-75 win over Lamar State - Port Arthur College.

The Cardinals followed with an 82-64 win over Paris Junior College in the semifinals.

In the regular season finale, Bastian finished with a season high 14 points, four rebounds and two steals in the Cardinals’ 87-68 win over Lamar State - Port Arthur College.

After a season opening 71-69 loss to Kilgore, the Cardinals went undefeated the remainder of the year to finish 20-1.

For the season, the 6’7” 235-pound sophomore forward averaged 6.9 points and a team-leading 7.1 rebounds per game on 57 percent shooting from the field. He appeared in 21 games with nine starts.

He has posted seven double-digit rebound games and seven games where he scored in double figures.

Some of his top performances of the season included 12 points and 13 rebounds in the Cardinals’ 97-42 win over Bossier Parish Community College and 12 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks in a 92-68 win over Panola College.
