JAZZ Chisholm Jr continued his production at the plate but the Atlanta Braves rallied late to prevent the sweep and stop the Miami Marlins’ win streak at four.

Chisholm finished 1-4 and scored one run in the Braves’ 7-6 win yesterday at Truist Park in Cumberland, Georgia.

In the top half of the second inning, Chisholm doubled off Braves pitcher Ian Anderson for the Marlins’ first hit of the afternoon.

He began the at bat when he took a pair of strikes looking on a 95 mph fastball and a changeup. Anderson then missed on another changeup and fastball to even the count. Chisholm doubled on the fifth pitch in the sequence, the third changeup in the at bat.

Aside from his production on the field, Chisholm’s infectious personality has quickly made him a fan favourite both in Miami and across the MLB. He shared a playful moment with Braves All-Star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr which went viral on social media. “Baseball is a game. Yea, you’re competing in a pro sport but at the same time, it’s a child’s game, you have to go out there and have fun,” Chisholm said. “Acuna has fun, we have fun so it’s going to be a fun battle every day. I’m looking in the dugout after I make a play just to mess around with them. It’s just a lot of fun to go out there and play against guys who are also having fun and not taking it too seriously.”

Chisholm’s performance in the series was highlighted by his three-run home run in the Marlins’ 6-5 extra innings win on Wednesday night.

“The stadium was rocking, so it was kinda lit to get them quiet,” Chisholm said of the more than 12,000 in attendance. “I feel like I’ve been seeing the ball well from opening day. I feel like I’ve been hitting the ball hard every day and staying with it. No matter if some balls aren’t falling every day, I’m not getting frustrated, I’m going out there trying to help my team win in any way I can so that’s what I’m going to keep doing.”

Chisholm placed the moment in perspective as the Braves paid tribute to iconic Hall of Fall slugger Hank Aaron and the fact that the series would conclude on MLB’s celebration of Jackie Robinson Day.

“I’m grateful for everything Jackie and Hank did for us in this game. They are the anchors for everybody and everything that we do in this game and they showed us that we can be great in this game,” Chisholm said. “I feel like Jackie Robinson is royalty in baseball and to actually wear his number knowing what he has done for the sport, for the people like me, it’s really important to me and my life.”

Chisholm finished Thursday with eight hits across 31 at-bats in 10 games. Six of his hits have gone for extra-bases (three doubles, one triple, and two home runs). His 1.030 OPS ranks third among National League rookies.
