POLICE are investigating a traffic fatality that occurred at the intersection of Bay and Nassau Streets last night just outside of the Holiday Inn Express.
According to Superintendent Janet McKenzie last night, the incident happened at around 9.15pm.
A Caucasian male, thought to have been a tourist, was crossing the street and struck by a white van believed to be driven by a taxi driver.
“At about 9.15pm, the police was alerted to a traffic accident that occurred on West Bay Street, just west of Fort Charlotte police station,” Superintendent McKenzie, who is in charge of Northwestern division said last night moments after the incident.
“Information received is that a white van was traveling west on West Bay Street and collided with a pedestrian who was traveling south to north on West Bay Street.
“EMS was summoned. They pronounced the body lifeless. Investigations are continuing.”
She said police were not certain whether the victim was a tourist and did not know the person’s nationality.
Superintendent McKenzie said it is believed the victim was walking alone at the time.
Eyewitnesses said passers-by quickly called police.
It was unclear last night whether the vehicle involved in the accident stopped or drove on after the collision.
Traffic lights at the scene of the accident have been out of action for a number of months as final work on The Pointe development was being completed. This has led to the increase in the speed of traffic, which would normally be held up by the lights sequence at the junction where last night’s tragedy occurred.

Probably some non-bahamian driving an uninsured cab with a taxi plate owned by a politician.
This murder will go unpunished.

Really sorry that this gentleman lost his life on what should have been a peaceful vacation on a beautiful island.
Another issue Road traffic has just completely abdicated their duty on. Ive noticed that tourists cross the street as if their skin colour means everyone will stop for them. Its really bad. They act like the school kids. And they know better, in their country it would mean a hefty fine for jaywalking. Someone here must be giving them instructions to *cross anywhere, cars will stop*. Educate tourists on safe road use

We have to wait and see? A Taxi, as those driver love to use the turning lane as a travel lane, and at a high rate of speed. From what I see, was a failure to keep left of centre, and killing in the course of dangerous driving!

failure to keep left of centre? 1.how often do you drive past that junction? its like driving on the surface of the moon. and 2. "*struck by a **white** van*", unless you saw a copy of the actual police report, **the car doesnt appear to be in the pic**. 3. Its a given that if you hit someone whos walking youre going to be found guilty of something, theory being your reflexes, due care and attention, appropriate speed should allow you to avoid them...unless they were trying to commit suicide..
or they were wearing dark colours on a dimly lit street as many many people exercising before dawn and after dusk do.... but youd probably still be charged

What possibility is there of finding and prosecuting this 'Taxi' driver? That area could do with a recording camera so that following up on such lawlessness could be more easily achieved. But skin colour? that is only in your own mind, and quite possibly he was not from the U.S. Don't just assume!

Ok forget skin colour. More like the *oblivious tourist who thinks they own the island and can get away with everything* syndrome. Like the girls who climbed the fence to go to the beach during the COVID lockdown. I actually know people who would brag about the things skin colour let them get away with in this country and its true, even if you want to believe its not
I've seen tourist crossing the road at that junction and downtown in general, they take huge risks

It one thing to knock someone for their distasteful remarks, but it's an entirely different thing to call for the media to suppress what you regard as distasteful. Enjoy your free voice while it still lasts because it's very much under assault everywhere as it is.

Why has the traffic light been out of service for so long? What is the problem? Why does it take months to do an easy fix? If the light can't be repaired then replace it. What is the problem? Where does our tax dollars go? And government wants more taxes?
Honestly this is just ridiculous. The Pointe's construction had absolutely nothing to do with the function of a damned traffic light.
This is why I am 100% opposed to any new taxes in this country. More taxes for what? Another 20 years of unreliable electricity? Couple more decades of gang wars? Another few hundred useless committees?
Time for Bahamians to demand more for our taxes and to deny ANY new taxes until we get a reliable, effective government...
