A MAN was yesterday sentenced to two years in prison after he admitted being in possession of a loaded gun last week.
Shannon Rahming appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes after officers found a .9mm pistol containing three rounds of ammunition on him on February 17.
He pleaded guilty to possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during his arraignment.
The court heard officers acting on information went to Joe Farrington Road where they approached the accused and informed him that he would be searched in reference to dangerous drugs and firearms. During the search they discovered a black Smith & Wesson pistol with three bullets in its magazine. Rahming was subsequently arrested and taken to the Elizabeth Estates Police Station, where he admitted the offences in an interview with police.
During the hearing, Rahming said he was going to turn the gun in but “ended up getting charged” before he had a chance.
In response, Magistrate Forbes told him it was “not acceptable under any circumstances for anyone to have a handgun.” As a result, he sentenced Rahming to two years at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.
Meanwhile, two teenagers appeared before Magistrate Samuel McKinney after they were accused of committing a similar offence.
Alton Percentie Jr, 18, and a 17-year-old male were accused of robbing a woman of $14 cash, a $100 handbag, $250 Samsung cellphone and a pair of bluetooth earpods on February 17. The prosecution argued Percentie also dishonestly received the items that same day.
During their arraignment, both teens denied the allegations and their case was adjourned to May 10 for trial.
In the meantime, the youngsters were each granted $5,000 bail.
