THE weekend of NCAA Division I featured several Bahamian players in rescheduled double headers, standout performances on the court and postponed games due to COVID-19.

Ole Miss Rebels senior point guard Valerie Nesbitt was the top performer on the weekend, but coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin’s team continues to struggle in the Southeastern Conference.

Nesbitt finished with 18 points and seven assists in the Rebels’ 78-68 loss to the Florida Gators yesterday at The Pavillion in Oxford, Mississippi. It was Nesbitt’s most efficient game of the season with 8-12 shooting from the field and just one turnover. The Rebels fell to 7-5 overall, 1-5 in the SEC and are mired in a four-game losing streak in conference play.

Franco Miller Jr and his Florida Gulf Coast Eagles split their weekend series against the Lipscomb Bison and are now 6-5 on the season.

In game one, Miller finished with eight points, seven assists and three rebounds in a 79-69 win. A once sizable lead was down to just five (68-63) with less than four minutes remaining, but FGCU responded with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes. Miller hit a pair of free throws down the stretch.

In game two, Miller fouled out in just 14 minutes and scored four points on 2-7 shooting from the field in a 71-56 loss.

Charles Bain and the Robert Morris Colonials were swept in a pair of games by Northern Kentucky

In game two, Bain finished with a season-high 12 points as one of five Colonials to score in double figures and also added two rebounds and three steals in a 79-74 overtime loss.

The Colonials hit their first eight shots from the field and raced out to a 24-7, just over seven minutes into the game. The run was capped by one of Bain’s two three-pointers. He scored seven of his 12 in the first half.

Robert Morris lost their fourth consecutive game, and fell to 3-7 overall, including 2-5 in the Horizon League.

Ahmard Harvey and his Coastal Carolina Chanticleers improved to 11-3 after they swept the Troy Trojans.

In game one, Harvey tied his career high with 10 points in a 90-81 win.

“Have to applaud the play of Harvey and Williamson. They will make us better, and we just said, ‘now’s the time,” said Coastal head coach Cliff Ellis.

In game two, Coastal won 70-65.

Kai Jones and the Texas Longhorns had their second consecutive game postponed this weekend. The Longhorns had last Wednesday’s game against Iowa State and Saturday’s game against TCU both postponed due to COVID-19 related protocols.

Annya Moss and her Mississippi Valley State team had Saturday’s scheduled game against Prairie View A&M postponed due to COVID-19 related protocols.

Make up games for either programme has yet to be determined.’
