An apparent shoulder injury will force Jazz Chisholm Jr to make his second stint on the Miami Marlins’ 10-day Injured List this season.

Results of Monday’s MRI on the rookie infielder were not revealed to the media at press time and the extent of the injury is not yet known, but Chisholm’s left shoulder contusion diagnosis was enough to warrant designation to the IL.

Chisholm suffered the injury in the first inning of the Marlins’ 7-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday afternoon when attempted to track down a bloop single from Bryce Harper.

The ball was just out of reach as Chisholm dove to make the catch over the shoulder and he landed awkwardly on the field. He was in visible pain as he exited the field but initial results were negative.

Earlier this season, Chisholm suffered a hamstring injury on April 28 and made his return May 16 following a brief rehab stint in AAA with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Chisholm also laboured through an ankle injury but avoided another stint on the IL.

The Marlins made the official announcement yesterday ahead of the series opener against the Washington Nationals and Chisholm became the latest starter sidelined due to injury.

Chisholm joins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez and first baseman Garrett Cooper on the 10-Day IL.

Outfielder Lewis Brinson and right hand pitcher Andrew Bellatti were recalled to complete the 40 man roster.

Headed into this week’s series on the road, the Marlins stand at 40-53 in the standings, 9.5 games behind first place in the National League East.

In 70 games this season, Chisholm is hitting .251 with a .754 OPS, with 66 hits, 115 total bases, 38 runs scored, 10 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, 34 RBI, and a National and 11 stolen bases.
