Criminal Records Office goes cashless

The Royal Bahamas Police Force is informing the public that, beginning Monday, 7th June, it will no longer take cash payments at the Criminal Records Office in New Providence.

Payments for Character Certificates, Firearms License renewal, Chassis checks and Fingerprint requests will now be accepted via debit or credit cards at the office, online through MyGateway.gov.bs or at a third party vendor. The third-party vendors are Cash-N’-Go, Sun Cash and Omni.

Majority of the public use cash, whats going on with that? It is like the Georgia elections, you are making it hard for black people to be apart of the system. The majority of our population is black and the majority of blacks use cash, so I guess you are.trying to discriminate against blacks.

Minnis say if you don’t have a credit card, you have to go by his friend, one Dr Rogers, ( yes Dr Rogers) place and make the payment. Then go back to the police for your tings. Persons licensing cars, guns getting birth certificates etc prepaire. The passport office is already mostly cashless and you have to pay online for some passports

Probably as unconstitutiinal as the Covid authority excersice with power is as I can guess "payment in any denomination IA a part of our law." This cashless new world order s posing before our eyes like the parting of the RedSea was challenged in EU court system where it lost Constitutionally.

There are pros and cons to this, but for all the inconveniences this will truly cause to us, I truly believe now it will be harder for the employees of these agencies to STEAL. Now the monies that are supposed to be collected will finally end up in the consolidated funds of the Bahamas. Now it should be easy to be transparent and show the country how much money each agency is collecting on our behalf on a yearly basis. There should be an update every year.

The consolidated fund is a big joke. There is NO transparency. The big shots are just looking for more to steal themselves!

Wow! A government readily admitting that it is so rife with fraud that it can no longer accept even our country's own currency in the form of cash.

And Minnis seems quite willing for his most impoverished and downtrodden plebes to be thrown to the wolves, i.e. the very greedy banks and other financial institutions that impose exorbitant fees on the poorest among us.

Yup, Minnis is indeed about as evil and heartless as they come.

This is simply a way to funnel or privatize some of the central government's revenue collection. What is needed is improve internal controls, computerization and effective prosecution of wrong-doers. The media simply transcribes what is said. They don't question anything. They won't dare ask who are the owners and who will be the ultimate beneficiaries of these decisions.

Government refusing to accept the money it issues (which BTW is the only legal tender)? What is this?

There may be a serious constitutional question here in terms of the government's ability to refuse to accept Bahamian currency notes and coins as legal tender. The same goes for every enterprise in the Bahamas that requires a government licence of any kind to conduct its business with the public.

Has the Bahamian government decided that Bahamian currency notes and coins minted at the expense of Bahamian taxpayers are no longer required to be accepted as legal tender in The Bahamas? Is physical Bahamian currency now very deliberately being made worthless by our very own Bahamian government?

Are most governments around the world doing the same thing, not because of their fears about fraud, but rather, because of their intense desire to completely do away with the financial privacy still enjoyed by the holders of currencies in the form of physical notes and coins, albeit sadly to a much lesser extent these days?

Anyone get the feeling that big governments everywhere are trying to control every aspect of our lives these days (tongue in cheek)?

This is a good move by the government. There have been reports of rampant corruption in government departments over the years, removing the temptation of tens of thousands of cash dollars will almost certainly cut down on theft by state employed workers and at the same time greatly increase efficiency and convenience for those needing these services. I suspect that the only people who will object will be those who stand to lose an unofficial extra income that they had enjoyed up to now. This same scenario has just played out at RTD where the licensing process has got so much easier and better in every way.

Whether government employees steal cash before it gets into the public treasury or after it gets into public treasury really makes no difference, aside from the fact that a different set of government employees will be benefitting from the theft. There's a much bigger picture here that we should all be most concerned about, especially now that our Central Bank is pushing the Sand Dollar as a 'virtual' crypto currency.

@DDK, especially our tiefin people who can’t save 25 cents a week and can’t manage a credit card, if they qualify, to save their lives.
You talk about being inconvenienced, I find it very inconvenient to have to stand in line for two hours or more to renew my drivers license or pay a bill.
You don’t seem to have a problem using technology to make inane posts on this site, try using it for something more productive occasionally.

A 'No cash' policy is becoming more & more common in a lot of countries. I think Denmark is now almost a cashless country. Quite a few government facilities in the US will no longer accept cash (personal cheque or credit card only), such as DMV, Passport Office etc.

Recall the leaders who sold their souls to the devil in March 17/2020 promised New and Emerging Technologies and promise of a New Normal after the pandemic, well now maybe the blind can see that Covid, economic collapse, the rise of new millionaires was all a plan to control and impoverish the secure middle class that arise under the PLP and old FNM. When their souls become aware of the lives they have destroyed there will be no mercy for them. They shall get returned to their families and suicides will follow leaders,as with Hitler.
