Time to give back with volunteer initiative

GOVERNOR General Sir Cornelius A Smith has called on citizens and residents to take part in a national volunteer initiative.

His comments came as he launched the Volunteers Call To Action during a press conference last week at his temporary office at One Montagu Place.

“When we first formed the Governor General’s Volunteer Bahamas, we developed a tagline that defined our vision,” Sir Cornelius said. “It was very simply, Volunteer Bahamas, a call to action.”

However, the initiative was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Eighteen months later, with Volunteer Bahamas having played an important role in the vaccination process and the country returning to some level of normalcy, Sir Cornelius said the time is now.

“Over the next week, we want everyone, young and old, rich and poor, in Nassau, Grand Bahama and throughout The Bahamas to pledge to donate time for a worthy cause on Saturday, November 20, or Sunday, November 21,” he said.

This upcoming Friday has been designated as national volunteer t-shirt day. Employers are asked to allow workers to wear a t-shirt of an organisation with which they are connected that does volunteer work.

November has been declared National Volunteerism Month.

Give back what? Were we not giving back in the last 19 months? People are frustrated, broke and tired. This season, everyone needs to take a chill pill and not expect the latest Iphone for Christmas. Stay home and keep the virus at Bay.

"Time". The best way to take your mind off your own frustration is to help someone else. There's no greater feeling than helping someone who needs help and seeing the joy on their faces. It does something in your spirit. So you're actually healing yourself.

I tink thats what hes talking about

... it would be great if he had only given this speech to politicians. People like CA Smith have taken far from more from this country than they have given, so maybe he should start with himself!

This is from a man whose Govt monthly rent alone can hire a few people. Much less his six figure salary & benefits.

These entitled folk can surely talk some foolishness.

Don't forget the pension.

I believe that the old people might have been onto something with not paying politicians.

any politicians volunteering to fly coach?

All my working life i have had to bring my own supplies.

Occasionally the bosses would thank us for the sacrifices, but sacrifice does not buy grocery.

I did not realize those were the least worst bosses until the next one. When I pointed out that I had done ABC with my own resources, he said; That is what we asked you to do. Anyways, their servers never served my files.

Do I help others? Yes, who others? Animals. They are grateful.

Smith has been on the gravy train living off of us taxpayers for decades and now he has the temerity, knowing many of us are all but underwater, to say it's time for us to give back. He should be shown the entrance door to the nearest nursing home, and I don't mean one funded with taxpayer money!
