THE government is planning a weekend of public observances in honour of Sir Sidney Poitier, scheduled for Father’s Day weekend.
The government said in a statement that it wanted to mark yesterday, which would have been Sir Sidney’s 95th birthday.
The Bahamian-American actor, producer, diplomat, writer died on January 6 at his home in Los Angeles, California.
The government formed a Cabinet subcommittee shortly after Sir Sidney’s death, chaired by Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell.
“That committee has been in touch with the family, and a set of formal and public observances are planned,” the statement said.
“With the concurrence of the family, the Bahamas government is planning a weekend of public observances in his honour scheduled for the Father’s Day weekend in and around 19 June 2022. Further details will follow.”

And yet Godfrey Kelly a Cabinet Minister living right in the Bahamas can't even get a state funeral?

Boutique projects schemed up by a substantive crown minister have no place in today's depressed economy. Go get your jollies off on your own dime.
This is also a time for Government to put all major projects on the 'back burner' and not start/fund new projects and focus solely on Healthcare, Security/Safety, the Environment and Enhancing The Flow of Dollars Into Everyday Life, Every Business, Everyday More Workers Joining the Payroll, Every Popoulaces. Flowing up and into a Broader Reaching Economy, ― Yes?

I am a Bahamian writer. I have worked with Calvin Lockhart on my novel HIGH, Bahamian Obeah and Black Magic. AMAZON.COM. It is impossible to date, to reflect a world view without being stigmatized for issues and having your talent totally ignored. Give Sir Sydney it all. We could only dream of getting half way there.

Comrade Carlton61, I knew and admired the big screens accomplishments of both Comrades. Calvin Lockhart, may have been a "Biggie Smalls" but no Sidney Poitier.
Freddy Munnings Sr, introduced me to Calvin at his office in the Cat @ Fiddle Night Club's building.

Look how Amos Ferguson and Joseph Spence got notoriety by the hands if great Bahamians. Just joking. Imagine Sir Sydney in is youth preaching in the strawmarket telling fellow Bahamians he wants to be a Hollywood Star. We would have sent him, you know where. I spoke with Freddie Munnings about the life of stardom and he did not like what he saw that was not a part of his upbringing. Calvin had brought in an agent from California to talk with me. He stayed as a guest at Crystal Palace. He was returning by hand my 500 page manuscript with professional advise from a Hollywood perspective. I became a disappointment on explaining those things don't happen in The Bahamas and within an instant my manuscript was shoved back toward me. They advised that with my writing talent I needed to come to San Diego pack up and leave. We signed an agent contract should I follow their changes to my manuscript. I knew they were serious after they explained a scene of a speedboat cutting across a reef on Andros to avoid RBDF by entering shallow beach water near land explaining a 6 million dollar shoot. Calvin wanted to act the part of Barbey the Obeaman. Still in my comfort zone picking corn. 😃
