EDITOR, The Tribune.
The Progressive Liberal Party government's plan to introduce local government in Nassau will add another unnecessary layer of bureaucracy in the capital, which is where the central government is headquartered. The prime minister resides in Nassau. In fact, every prime minister dating back to Sir Roland Symonette lived in Nassau. To the best of my knowledge, each of Nassau's 24 MPs resides in New Providence, where the House of Assembly and the Senate are located.
The governor general resides in Nassau. The commissioner of police resides in Nassau. The commodore of the Defence Force resides in Nassau. The comptroller of Bahamas Customs usually resides in Nassau. The directorate of Bahamas Immigration resides in Nassau. The Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal are both located in Nassau. The director of public prosecutions resides in Nassau. The head of Bahamas Department of Corrections resides in Nassau. The main purpose of local government in the Family Islands was to make the central government more accessible to the residents of the islands, like Nassauvians who live a mere stone throw away from the three main organs of the central government. That's why I view the introduction of local government in Nassau as superfluous.

Guess you forgot. Got to give local boys fat checks to do nothing so they can drive around in fancy cars with police escorts at time.

The writer is simply dismissive of a good idea. The island is New Providence and not Nassau. Bahamians don't have a clue how the Westminister system of government and the roles of MP's and parliament.
There is local government in Ottawa, Washington D.C, Canberra and London. Yet the head of government in those countries reside there. The writer is typical of many bahamians, self -righteous and ignorant of many things. Sensible, progressive ideas take years to reach this country.

Will the MPs answer to the mayors of Nassau or Fox Hill or Carmichael or Gambier?
