FORMER Deputy Prime Minister Cynthia “Mother” Pratt is favoured to be the next governor-general of The Bahamas, The Tribune understands.
Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis told reporters on Friday that an announcement about the post will be made “in short order”, giving no further details.
Bishop Neil Ellis was among the leading figures tapped to succeed Sir Cornelius A Smith, but he reportedly declined the position.
Asked why he declined the post, he said yesterday: “The prime minister hasn’t made his announcement yet, so I will wait for him to do so before commenting. That’s the proper way to go about it.”
Mrs Pratt was the first woman to be deputy prime minister, serving as acting prime minister in 2005 after Perry Christie suffered a stroke. She was sworn in as the deputy to the governor-general on August 1, 2022.
She declined to comment yesterday about her future, saying she is awaiting Mr Davis’ announcement.
Sir Cornelius was appointed governor general on June 28, 2019. The past four governors-general served for about four years.

Comrades, I've been provided with a name of which few would've, could've ever imagined were in line as the person pitched to become the colony's next governor general. ---- Most certainly, some will praise whilst others will outright queries premiership's reasoning. --- Personally, I think it's a nervy political move.

Not my place as a non-political comrade to influence the luring behaviour of a premiership. --- Yes?

This is ridiculous, what is this the retirement mecca for politicians? Choose someone with the necessary qualities who by the probabilities can serve for 10 years minimum. A 10 year term "might" begin to justify the pension

Additionally, choose people who will not be getting 2 pensions.

ComradeThisIsOurs, what if to begin by doing away with all the security, fleet motor cars, housing, free electricty and sewages, pensions, drycleaning, state health care and state burials, out of pocket allowances, etc, etc.

Just for y'all to know
A GG retires with FULL 6 figure salary & perks for life & perpetuity.
This country is carrying a heavy load by holding on to the Crown. It is totally asinine for these GG to get two and three retirement pay outs from the government for this so-called "service to country" ........ while the regular citizen has to pinch pennies to just get by each day.

The Crown is our stable anchor. Republics have poor track records and would cost money as well for a President.

The GG is not a politician and represents the Head of State. Whether you like the Monarchy or nnot, we need a Head of State which should be a non political position. The alternative would be a republic and elected head of state. I would suggest staying with “the devil we know.”

The point isnt who they are or that they are (though that is a point, we've made a mockery of governance), it's the musical chairs game they're playing to give friends of the party a pension. If govt should switch in 2026 they'll appoint a new one midterm they'll switch them near end of term. 2 more pensions. The country could be supporting pensions for 5 GG'S at one time. Ridiculous. I though they were retiring him for health reasons, but no. He gets a diplomatic posting so why are they retiring him?. While I think Smith is an appropriate choice for GG, I do not think Mother Pratt is, hopefully it's just a rumour.

Not one GG is not a politician. They are put there by the party of power because of their political persuasion.
The only GG who was a non politician since Independence was Sir John Paul, and he stayed in office for less than one month.

It will place my bet on one of them Numbers Boys who been so busy spending long dollars to rehabilitate themselves as upright citizens, if not then some rich religious person; an apostle or bishop or something like that. Third guess would be the usual failed politician.

All this money being spent on past and present GG's. You wouldn't think there are 10's of thousands of hungry Bahamians and living in clapboard houses on illegal land with minimal electricity.

Ridiculous. They feed us this bait to fight over who we should send to eat at the table next. Meanwhile people using outdoor toilets and paying 1000 dollar electricity bills. This smacks of the same elitism as Sebas landing at the sports center to a crowd of cheering broke people, minimum wage bahamian oohing and ahhing at who was best dressed at the 50th balls while they on the outside peeping through the slots in the fence. Ridiculous. In 2 years we get to fight over the next highly favored.
When will Cornish be charged?
