Two dead and five hurt in mass shooting

Two young men are dead and five more in hospital after a mass shooting in the Robinson Road and Market Street area on Saturday afternoon.

The victims were shot shortly after 2pm as they were next to a car in the area - with gunmen pulling up in a Nissan vehicle, exiting the car and opening fire.

Two men who died at the scene are aged 18 and 20, while the other five, aged from 16 to 22, were taken to hospital with gunshot injuries. Police said their condition is unknown.

Police said that as the gunmen opened fire, several of the victims fled - although one person in the vehicle succumbed to his injuries.

The second fatality was one of those who ran away, but he collapsed and died from his injuries in the street.

Crowds gathered at the scene crying and in distress. One woman thought to be the mother of one of the victims fainted and collapsed.

One of the men who died at the scene had an electronic ankle monitor, along with one of the men taken to hospital.

Police appealed for members of the public able to assist with the investigation to contact 502-9991 or 919.

Officers pledged to step up police presence in the area, saying "we have our boots on the ground".

... these things never happened when I was growing up, now as a people we are barely moved when they happen! We have strayed far from the "... abiding respect for Christian values and rule of law..." our founders envisioned, that would allow us to live in the freedom we all deserve!

Sad to watch a nation in decline, fueled by poor parenting and the lack of a moral compass in our populace!

"*Officers pledged to step up police presence in the area*"

Useless. They need to locate the "*high ranking politician*", try him for treason and unravel his network of corruption

Exactly what has changed with a female commissioner? It baffles me when various proposals or appointments are made, nobody wants to ask the hard questions. The pattern is always the same, the Lucayan Sale Rally, the commissioner appointment the new biometric voting cards, the electronic voting system, Starlink and SpaceX, the Cruise Porte, RCi PI, homeporting, and on and on, the media response is always the same, *this is a great opportunity*, some even push for freebies and access for themselves, you can forget objectivity after that, bought and paid for, until of course after the debacle when everyone tries to disassociate themselves.

**Find the *high ranking politiician***

I agree 100%.
Start at the top, where the fish begins its rot.
This administration is hiding far, far too much, and is totally compromised.
Demand the US tell us the name of the high ranking politician.
It may surprise us, it may not.
In any case they need to face justice.

@ThisisOurs good observation on the numbers of issues. The period leading up as to who will be the next leader in elections for the next 5 year term of powerful office is the most vulnerable position of the leaders of the political parties.

Ambitious wannabees wanting to be the next PM is not always the Opposition leader and other political party leaders but there are those high ranking wannabees within these groups who will cleverly find ways to undermine Caesar. While the ultimate head will be distinctly faulted, the sources of these failures lies with the decades long failures of the Urban Renewal within these known communities with massive challenges. The Police is the end unit. Labour and unemployment is also a challenge, challenges from decades exist with immigration within these areas and host of sociological behaviors of groups just seem to be allowed to fester.

The Opposition leader has challenges with many persons who have almost certain ambitions of being leaders from the times of Dr. Minnis.

@TalRussell good comments but on no government as the entire unit will not make it stop ------ stems or originates from individuals who seem to be a previous good idea to raise lucrative revenue stream of fees from Work Permits, others seem to use it for cheap labour, not only Haitians to build Bah Mar and rebuild British Colonial Hotel etcetc. Known originating challenges is for decades now worse in the Bahamas as the sixth most expensive country to live in ----- using known Minimum Wage for foreign workers has forced them to live at unlivable wages which is horrible

Agreed Tal. To say this is only a Haitian problem is to stick your head in the sand. There are many Bahamians involved in crime and many more involved in corruption who are supposed to convict criminals (the FBI investigation proved that). <br/>Crime is a society problem (starts in the home with values instilled by parents and other family members and expands to the community where there is not only lack of opportunities but apathy towards those who can use a helping hand). It's a multi-faceted problem that will never be solved by just playing the **blame game**. SIGH

“…abiding respect for Christian values and rule of law..." our founders envisioned, that would allow us to live in the freedom we all deserve! Our founders cry at Independence was to go make millonairs of ourselves, be drug-dealers, and not have to work. Tell me, where are the Christian values and rule of law in that? And how was becoming rich without a work ethic ever going to build a nation?

Our country was safe before the 10th July 1967. Pindling made advances and mistakes. The best Prime Minister we were blessed with was Ingraham. Christie, Minnis, Davis sold us out. I was friendly with one, but not today. My sadness in recognizing my country is truly palpable and I cannot repair the damage. Perhaps a new insight with a redisigned FNM will stop the purge, but it wlll take effort, too much has been lost to the cruise ship industry and foreign advantage takers with the blessing of the past three prime ministers. They have also allowed garbage illegal takeovers on Athol Island, Rose Island and the Exuma cays, Harbour Island and much more, stand up and fight!

I think it is very obvious now where our crime situation is going (think Columbia and Mexico). With all of the daylight attacks and heavy weaponry it is clear that the gangs have immense pull and power in the country. What comes next? If and when government officials start to take a tough stance we will then see them and their families being attacked and/or killed.
I fear our officials have waited too long and are now too scared to act against these powerful gangs. At some point we will be forced to bring in a para-military force to try to root them out.
