Storm forces cancellation of some Bahamasair flights

Bahamasair has cancelled all flights into Inagua and Mayaguana due to Hurricane Erin.  The airline is expected to resume flights into the affected islands tomorrow.

“Bahamasair advises the travelling public that Flight UP425, scheduled to operate between Inagua and Mayaguana on Monday, 18th August 2025, has been cancelled due to the effects of weather system Erin. The flight will resume on Tuesday, 19th August, 2025, at 12pm,” said Bahamasair.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the Southeast Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.  This includes the islands of Inagua, Mayaguana, Acklins, Crooked Island, Samana Cay, Long Cay and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

A Tropical Storm Warning means that Tropical Storm conditions are expected within 36 hours.

According to the Department Meteorology, Erin is forecasted to remain a “large and dangerous major hurricane” through the middle of this week.

Erin is currently a Category 3 hurricane with some increase in size and strength forecasted during the next 48 hours.

“Hurricane Erin is moving toward the west-northwest near 13mph.  This general motion is expected to continue tonight, followed by a gradual turn to the northwest and north on Monday and Tuesday.  On the forecast track, the center of Erin is expected to pass to the east and northeast of the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Southeast Bahamas tonight into Monday.   Maximum sustained winds are near 125mph with higher gusts,” said the Department of Meteorology.

“Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 50 miles from the centre and tropical Storm force winds extend outward up to 205 miles from the centre.

“Residents in the Southeast Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands should have already made preparations for the Tropical Storm conditions beginning late tonight and early Monday morning.  These conditions will continue through the day on Monday, and will include feeder bands from Erin with showers and thunderstorms inclusive of strong gusty winds to tropical storm strength (up to 35 knots/40 mph), heavy rainfall, tornadic activity and hail.

“Rainfall amounts of two to four inches with isolated amounts of 6 inches are expected from the outer bands of Erin that will affect the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Southeast Bahamas. Dangerous swells generated by Erin is now affecting the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Southeast Bahamas and will spread into the Central and Northwest Bahamas on Monday and Tuesday.  Mariners should remain in ports until the ending of the week as the seas could become extremely rough and dangerous during the swells.

“Residents in the Central Bahamas, particularly those in San Salvador, should closely monitor Alerts issued by the Bahamas Department of Meteorology and be ready to make preparations for possible Tropical Storm conditions in the next few days.”
