A NEW mother was sentenced to six months in prison yesterday for vehicular manslaughter but will remain out on bail pending a ruling on whether her sentence will be deferred.
Ashanti Johnson, 27, of Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera, appeared before Senior Justice Gregory Hilton for sentencing.
On December 11, 2022, Johnson lost control of her black Honda Stream while driving south on Queen’s Highway, Eleuthera, crashing into a wall and a tree around 3.15am.
She sustained minor injuries, but her passenger, Kendrick Moss, died at the scene.
At the time of the crash, Johnson had no driver’s licence and the vehicle was uninsured.
She previously pleaded guilty to the charge, but sentencing was delayed until after she gave birth. Her lawyer argued that her sentence should be deferred, noting that she gave birth to a son on July 5.
Johnson will remain on bail until August 27, when the court will decide whether her prison term will be deferred. She was also ordered to pay $10,000 to the estate of the deceased.
