A 36-year-old man was remanded to prison on Monday after he was accused of having sexual intercourse with a seven-year-old girl last week.
Michael Lightfoot was arraigned on a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse before Assistant Chief Magistrate Carolyn Vogt Evans.
The defendant allegedly had sexual intercourse with the underaged girl on July 8 in New Providence.
Lightfoot was not required to enter a plea at that time. He was informed his matter will proceed to the Supreme Court via a voluntary bill of indictment (VBI).
He was also told of his right to apply for bail through the higher court.
The defendant will be remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until his VBI is potentially served on October 1.
Inspector Shadrach Coakley served as the prosecutor.
