THE Bahamas women’s national basketball team continued its preparation for the upcoming FIBA Caribbean Championships with a practice session held at the D.W. Davis gymnasium this past weekend.
The regional tournament is scheduled to be held in Georgetown, Guyana, from November 11-17, and The Bahamas’ squad is focused on leaving its mark with a strong showing to advance to the next round in the CVC.
Head coach Donillo “Donny” Culmer led the practice, working on various offensive and defensive sets.
“We want to move on in the Women’s CVC tournaments,” Coach Donny said.
Culmer also spoke on the current team and the team's strategy for the tournament.
“We have plenty young women, as you can see, and we have a couple vets what went on the last trip to Cuba.
“The two girls we really have to rely on are Valerie Nesbit and Lashann Higgs, but everybody else is, like I said, young and new but we have young legs, so we got to be able to get up and down the floor and put the ball in the basket.”
The national team’s last trip won the bronze medal after defeating Jamaica 68-57. This trip, the team hopes to place higher.
“Hopefully we medal and get gold or silver this time, we are looking for improvement, like I say, some of the girls are young and it's their first time.
“But we just have to go out there and prepare and let the chips fall where they may and give it our all,” said Culmer.
Culmer spoke about the training schedule.
“We go every day except Sunday, some days we have a full crowd, some days it lacks, but the coaches are here every day, not a coach missing, but we put in the work.”
Team Bahamas will need to finish in the top two to advance to the next round. The team plans to travel to Guyana on November 10.
