THE Progressive Liberal Party is expected to ratify a slate of candidates tomorrow for the next general election, including Senator Darren Pickstock for the Golden Isles constituency, where a by-election is expected to be held.
Party insiders told The Tribune that several incumbents, including Seabreeze MP Leslia Miller-Brice, Garden Hills MP Mario Bowleg, and Golden Gates MP Pia Glover-Rolle, are also set to be confirmed. The decisions follow recent interviews by the PLP’s Candidates Committee, which has given the green light to several hopefuls.
Videos circulating on social media last week showed Mrs Miller-Brice, Mr Bowleg, and South Beach MP Bacchus Rolle clasping hands and celebrating as supporters cheered. Mrs Miller-Brice later shared a post confirming her re-nomination, saying she was grateful for the opportunity to serve and looked forward to continuing her work.
Among others expected to face the committee this week is broadcaster and former government press secretary Clint Watson, the frontrunner for the Southern Shores seat.
PLP officials emphasised yesterday that the final say lies with the party’s National General Council, which meets on Thursday to formalise nominations.
PLP Chairman Fred Mitchell told reporters to “stand by” for the outcome, while Deputy Chairman Obie Roberts said the process involves both recommendation and ratification. The Candidates Committee may endorse nominees, but the council, which includes stalwart councillors and senior members, must approve each by vote.
The expected announcements come as the party prepares for a possible by-election in Golden Isles following the death of area MP Vaughn Miller. House Speaker Patricia Deveaux confirmed she has formally notified the Governor General of the vacancy.
Under Bahamian law, a writ for a by-election must be issued within 60 days of a vacancy, with the vote to follow within 21 to 30 days after the writ is issued.
Golden Isles is regarded as a key swing constituency, where voters have expressed frustration in recent years about inconsistent representation.
Branch chairman Henrico Ellis said anticipation is high ahead of Thursday’s meeting. He said a candidate has already been identified but reiterated that the final decision rests with the council. “It’s going to be an exciting night,” he said.
