COMFORT Suites said a fire which broke out in its engineering room on Monday evening was sparked when lightning struck a transformer during bad weather.
Police said they were called to the Paradise Island resort shortly after 5.45pm. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, but the electrical room sustained extensive fire and water damage and an adjacent room suffered moderate damage.
The resort praised staff member Ken Rolle for his swift response, saying his actions helped prevent a larger disaster.
“The Royal Bahamas Police Force Fire Services and the Royal Bahamas Police Force arrived promptly when contacted and acted quickly,” the resort said in a statement. “We are sincerely grateful for their swift vigilance. We are pleased to advise that damage is limited to our electrical room which houses our transformer and elated to share that no one was injured.”
