Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBSL) has announced that applications are now open for its 2027 Apprenticeship Programme - a four-year initiative that provides internationally-accredited technical education, paid workplace training and experience for young Bahamians.

The Shipyard, in a statement, said the long-term investment in its Apprenticeship Programme reflects a shared commitment between industry and education to strengthen The Bahamas' skilled workforce. The initiative is designed to prepare young Bahamians for careers in areas such as marine welding, steel fabrication, pipe fitting and mechanical trades.  

Through its partnership with the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) in Grand Bahama, and the Engineering College in the UK, the Shipyard’s apprentices complete four months of foundational training at the former, followed by advanced, internationally-certified trade studies in the UK. The Shipyard said this is designed to create a structured pathway that equips participants with the competence, safety awareness and hands-on experience required by a ship repair facility. 

"Developing Bahamian talent is one of the most important investments we can make," said Ekeila Sands, Grand Bahama Shipyard’s human resources compliance and training manager.

"The Apprenticeship Programme reflects our commitment to creating opportunities through education, training and meaningful careers. More than 100 members of our workforce have either entered the Shipyard through the Apprenticeship Programme or are currently progressing through it, demonstrating the lasting impact the programme continues to have."

While experienced international specialists will always perform a key role in supporting complex vessel repairs and transferring technical knowledge, the Shipyard said it remains fully committed to employing Bahamians and growing a pool of skilled talent which will support the the industry’s future and country’s long-term economic growth.

“One of the greatest benefits of the apprenticeship programme was the opportunity to rotate through each trade department,” explained Kieron Nairn, Grand Bahama Shipyard’s dock master.

“During my third year in the programme, I had the opportunity to work closely with the dock masters. Seeing the level of responsibility, leadership and technical expertise, the role required sparked my interest and ultimately inspired me to pursue that career path.

“For anyone considering applying, I would absolutely encourage you to do it. The apprenticeship is more than just a training programme; it’s an opportunity to build valuable technical skills, develop professionally and establish a rewarding career in the maritime industry. It laid the foundation for my career and I’m grateful I took that first step.”
