Corporal 1964 William Smith testified in the trial of Garnett Newbold, 59, before Justice Neil Braithwaite. Newbold faces charges of attempted murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Prosecutors allege that Newbold and his accomplices robbed Karen Bain of a deposit bag containing $2,654 belonging to Bahamasair as she attempted to place it in a drop-off box at the domestic terminal on October 2, 2021.

Corporal Smith said he was escorting Ms Bain to the drop-off box when armed assailants shot him.

He said he was not himself after the shooting, but knew he had been hit and used whatever he had at hand to stem the bleeding.

Corporal Smith told defence attorney Wendawn Miller-Frazier that he never saw the shooter and could not identify any accomplice after the shooting.

He also could not say what happened to the deposit bag.

Ella Adderley testified that at about 4pm on the day of the robbery, she called Jeffrey Lunn for a ride because she felt unwell at work. She said she was pregnant at the time, felt sick and had been vomiting.

Ms Adderley said she asked Lunn to take her to a grocery store to get food, but he told her he first had to stop at the airport to collect a bag from Air Canada.

She said she remained in the car in the airport parking lot and did not see anything before they left.

Ms Adderley said police later stopped the Nissan Cube near the JFK roundabout while she was inside with several men.

She said that after the vehicle stopped at a yard in Tropical Gardens, she allegedly saw Newbold holding a gun and a bag.

Ms Adderley claimed she overheard Newbold saying that he had shot a police officer.

She also said she saw someone attempting to place a new licence plate on the vehicle.

Ms Adderley said someone later demanded that she get out of the vehicle, prompting her to jump out and run away.

Under cross-examination, Ms Adderley agreed that she had been charged in connection with the matter.

The defence said Ms Adderley claimed she had been at Brian Goodridge’s home around 5pm and at Newbold’s home by 6pm or 7pm.

Goodridge and Lunn were also charged in connection with the matter in 2021.

The defence suggested that Ms Adderley could not recall exactly when she visited the locations because she was making up the story.

Ms Adderley told prosecutors she did not know that anything was going to happen that day.
