Man arrested over alleged cruise ship sexual assault

AN ALLEGED sexual assault involving two Belgian citizens occurred aboard a cruise ship early Monday morning, with a 47-year-old man later arrested in connection with the incident.

According to a preliminary police report, shortly after 2am on September 7, a woman alerted officials aboard the cruise ship that she had been sexually assaulted in her room by a man known to her.

Police said the woman reported that she and the man had visited several bars aboard the ship, where they consumed alcoholic beverages, before returning to their assigned room.

While in the room, the woman reportedly complained of a headache and was given medication by the man. She told authorities that after taking the medication, she lost consciousness.

Police said the woman reported that she later regained consciousness and found the man sexually assaulting her. She then left the room and reported the alleged assault.

The woman was examined by a physician aboard the ship.

When the vessel arrived in New Providence, the incident was reported to the Tourism Police Station.

Officers from the Central Investigation Department subsequently arrested and cautioned the 47-year-old man in connection with the allegation.

Police also processed the scene for evidence.
