The University of The Bahamas Mingoes men’s soccer team got one goal each from forward Samora Saunders and winger Keno Thomas as they opened their 2026-2027 season with a 2-2 draw against Millennia Atlantic University Macaws yesterday in Doral, Florida.

UB’s head coach, Alex Thompson, said they have struggled over the years against the Macaws.

“It speaks to the growth of the squad and the improvement and first competitive game as well.” Thompson said. “There were some bright spots, particularly Ahmad Smith going back into goal - it was a fantastic performance. Freshman Nathan Walker came in and played big minutes to contribute to the team.”

Playing at the Meadows Park, UB got off to a slow start conceding a goal in the 14th minute to fall into a 1-0 hole early. They remained composed as midfielder Rodain Lamour Jr. got the breakaway to goal before passing it to a trailing Saunders who crashed the box and scored the goal to tie the match at one goal a piece in the 27th minute.

The Macaws found the back of the net just before half-time as they went up 2-1 heading into the half.

Thompson made some adjustments at the half that saw UB creating more chances to find the equalizer. That equalizer came when forward Nahum Johnson found winger Keno Thomas in the 18-yard box. Thomas got put the ball into the back of the net in the 67th minute.

Both teams spent the rest of match looking for the go-ahead goal. UB had some clear chances but could not put it away. UB’s goalkeeper Ahmad Smith and his defense snuffed the Macaw’s chances to keep the second half clean sheet.

UB’s defender Junior Kelly said he and the seniors led well and were looking for the win.

“We came out with the goal to try and change that. We didn't get the result we were looking for, but it's a step for progress,” Kelly said.

Next up for UB is an 8 a.m. matchup against Trinity College of Florida on Saturday, September 26 at Mullins Park, Coral Springs. Thompson will do a debrief to get his players mentally ready for that matchup.
