$500,000 SOS CALL IS ANSWERED

THE extraordinary public response to appeals for help for the Family Islands devastated by Hurricane Joaquin has resulted in the $500,000 target of donations of cash and emergency supplies set by the SOS - Save Our South initiative being exceeded and allowing HeadKnowles, the relief group, to plan for the next phase of the operation.

THE Bahamas Amateur Cycling Federation is scheduled to hold its annual Bertram ‘Cowboy’ Musgrove Tour De New Providence Cycling Classic over the weekend of October 30 to November 1. The event is designed for competitors in the level 1 for male, level II, level III and level IV for men and women.

GRAND Bahama Rotarian Mike Stafford said on Friday that the Rotary Clubs on the island have joined in a major international fundraising effort to help rebuild the devastated economies of the southern islands affected by Hurricane Joaquin.

THE top scorer in City Bowling League competition last night was Sonith Lockhart of Carib Construction who downed the pins for a huge 667 high three game set. Runner-up MVP was Lee Davis of Ten Back Strikers with another big set of 650. Yule Hoyte of Ten Back Strikers had an impressive 256 high game with Ritchie Pyfrom dropping the pins for a 245 second high game.

Butler-Turner's hurricane relief flight hampered by lack of communications

THERE is still no clarification on how relief efforts for those southern islands ravaged by Hurricane Joaquin would be carried out as communications systems are still down. A team organised by Trans Island Airways executives and Long Island MP Loretta Butler-Turner were attempting on Saturday morning to mobilise supplies and support teams to as many of the affected islands as possible, but the uncertainty over the infrastructure has delayed those plans.

SPENCER Cartwright, the current and four-time national champion in the Optimist Dinghy class, won the Bahamas Junior Sunfish National Championship for the first time as the Nassau Yacht Club hosted the annual event over the weekend.
