Comrades, You are overlooking the fact that the PLP government wants to be rated on "passing legislations". If we look at the average time frame for creating laws in our country, is not less than 90 days. It is not a secret that we are noted for passing laws but we are also noted for our inability/refusal to enforce our laws). Unfortunately, some of us, some Bahamian people, want action. The "proof of the pudding" is in the eating. We want to rate the PLP government on its ability to enact/enforce/execute the legislations.
skills needed: Unlike MoT's Spanish language oversight, I hope that MoT remembers that the official language of Brazil is Portuguese. Back in the 1980s when the MoT had airlifts from France and Germany, participating hotel properties had to choices (1) hire a foreign language teacher or (2) encourage employees to attend the former Bahamas Hotel Training College. The courses/workshops taught front line employees "hotel French" and/or "hotel German". That is, the conversational vocabulary needed for check-in, restaurant service, bar service and housekeeping service. Of course, there were always one or two employees who were fluent in the language.
What a wonderful gift. Sadly, we do not live forever. I hope that Ms. Davis leaves/wills this house and land to the Urban Renewal Commission for those less fortunate than herself who are in need of temporary shelter.
My fellow Bahamians, we are in the 21st century. Let's move "forward, upward and onward together"
George Santayana, Classical American Philosopher:
Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. (Variations) Those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes. Those who do not read history are doomed to repeat it. Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors are destined to repeat them. Those who do not know history's mistakes are doomed to repeat them.
Friends, I listened to an interview with our Governor General, Sir Arthur Foulkes, former Governor General Sir Orville Turnquest and the Honourable George Smith. Sir Arthur stated that the insertion of "christian values" was added to the preamble of the Constitution by Reverend Reuben Cooper. In 1971, Reverend Cooper was President of the Bahamas Christian Council.
Prime Minister Christie has yet to realize that The Bahamas he is in the Internet age. Not only is the Internet used for lotteries, it is also used by Bahamians to participate in the issues confronting the country. Unfortunately for the Prime Minister, each word he utters is broadcast and scrutinized by his fellow citizens. Nimble Bahamians will challenge his government on each sound bite and evasive tactic.
Statutory boards are boards that are required by law. Because of eGovernment, we can access our laws online to determine the role of the statutory boards and we can glean the skills needed and compare the legal requirements and personal skills to determine a fit. http://laws.bahamas.gov.bs/cms/
Traditionally (in commonwealth jurisdictions), appointments to statutory boards are made on the basis of the merit of the individuals concerned taking into account the following: (a) ability, (b) expertise, (c) experience, (d) integrity, and (e) commitment to public service. In addition to these qualities, the government must give due regards to the statutory provisions of statutory bodies, function and nature of business of the bodies concerned.”
Below is an objective review of the Board of Directors for the Central Bank of The Bahamas
For example: Central Bank of The Bahamas Act. Section 3 (5) Board of Directors. “There shall be a Board of Directors of the Bank which shall be responsible for the policy and general administration of the Bank and without affecting the generality of the foregoing keeping under review the internal financial controls of the Bank with a view to securing the proper conduct of its financial affairs.” Based on the Act, the board consists of five persons 2(1)(b): the Governor of the Central Bank and four other directors. “our other Directors, being persons appearing to the Governor-General to have wide experience in, and to have shown capacity in, financial or commercial matters, industry, law or administration…” In addition, (3) “The Board may make bye-laws regulating the conduct of the Bank's business and may make regulations and issue orders for the purpose of giving effect to the provisions of this Act.”
What prohibits one from being a appointed or remain a Director— (a) member of either House of Parliament; (b) has been convicted by a court of an indictable offence or other offence involving dishonesty; (c) has been adjudged or otherwise declared bankrupt under any law in force in The Bahamas; or (d) is a director, officer or employee of, or is a shareholder of, or has a controlling interest in, any financial institution regulated by the Central Bank.
Social ills are human problems resulting from human behavior. Alleviating social ills require the affected persons to make a change. Handouts do not promote change. The people need to take ownership and become involved rather than being spectators. Research has shown that undoing years of habits takes time. There is no quick fix. Demolishing direlect buildings is not changing behavior. It is nothing more than environmental cleanup. What is Urban Renewal 2.0 doing to (1) prevent or reduce drug use, (2) prevent or reduce teenage pregnancies, (3) improve family planning, (4) improve parenting, (5) reinvigorate the family, (6) rehabilitate drug addicts and criminals? These are some of the ills that plague St. Cecilia.
Sorry Mr. Prime Minister, Urban Renewal is not grounded in the community. The Police, Social Workers, the Methodists group are all outsiders. The drive in to "work" and drive out to return to their homes. The people in the targeted areas need to participate in the change.
This is a waste of newspaper space. Friends, based on what is omitted, it can be inferred that the government has to reimburse some businesses. Remember, the former PM said that the cost of the road works project included funds for business interruption. The former PM did not say how much money was allocated for reimbursement. PM Christie stated that the government does not know how reimbursement will be handled. PM Christie stated that the government will listen to all grievances.
Nunez, According to Shlomo Breznitz, co-author of "Maximum Brainpower: Challenging the Brain for Health and Wisdom", the brain takes longer to unlearn experiences and behaviour; therefore, people do things they don't want to do and they don't realize what they are doing. Sadly, I don't think this is the case here because we have too many "justifications" but no apologies. Consequently, the cynical me believes that we have a conflict between ethic (what society believes is right) and morals (what Christie and Co believe is right). Christie and Co appear to be in line with John Stuart Mills and Jeremy Bentham--utilitarianism --“the end justifies the means.” Hopefully, before the midterm, Christie and Co will unlearn the unjust behavior and move toward Kant's deontology where both the actions and outcomes must be ethical.
