That is why the government in their last budget made certain duty concessions for yachts. That is an attempt to get mega yachts to register in the Bahamas. That ties in to the business plans of the Nassau Cruise Port developers.

Bahamians have lived this dichotomy for years. Clean well maintained areas for tourism whilst many of them living in poorly maintained and managed communities. A bahamian PHD holder made that comment on social media. My sister the last time, she visited home said this to me. Who is responsible for maintaining government buildings? Driving around, she said that there was no real concerted effort or plan to maintain government buildings.

What is needed in this country is a massive change of attitude in this country. People have to learn tp care about themselves, others and their environment. Maybe the introduction of a real system of local government may accomplish that.

Hubert Ingraham was an exception. He was well versed in what was going on every ministry. He knew how each ministry should function. All of the things he did and attempted are needed in this country.

The writer is talking about implementing a progressive income tax. The same as the son of a former FNM finance minister. That is a sensible progressive idea. However it will be some time before that was come to fruition in the Bahamas. Like some one pointed out, sensible progressive take years, some time decades to be implemented in this country.

The PLP and the FNM are now the same party. They are interchangeable.

Dr.Minnis promise a report on the situation which led to the previous BPL board being fired. It was never delivered. There was a report on the fire at the Clifton plant which was given to the FNM cabinet. It was never released to the public.

Now the PLP comes along with their forensic audit. Nothing will come of this audit. It will be simply used as political ammunition for the up coming election. Both parties are simply playing games with a largely gullible public.

@dahasamo. You don't know what you are talking about. The financial secretary does not have that power. That is a law which was passed by the parliament made up of both FNM and PLP members .In fact , the law was supported by a well-known FNM supporter. His business is ultimately going to benefit greatly from it.

I don't understand this strategy. Penalizing tenants for landlords who are delinquent in paying their property tax.

Most bahamians do not read for enjoyment, knowledge or pleasure. My self included. I went years without reading books after I finish going to school. The public school system. I have started recently to attempt to read various genres of books.

I vividly remember the first time I saw the main library in Broward County, down town Fort Lauderdale. Also the Books a Million store in the mall. I said to myself, there is nothing like this in the Bahamas.

The lack of persons who read and discuss ideas is one of the reasons, the level of public debate in this country is so low. Many of the politicians and the elite in this country do not understand public policy. They are light years behind in that regard. Ideas written and implemented years ago in other countries have not been attempted in this country yet.

Bahamians don't know how their government works.Even so call politicians.

Bahamians merely vote. They can't explain or don't know the ideology or the political philosophy of these parties. in fact they are quite to live under an autocratic dictatorship. Since they do not seem to tolerate dissent or opposition

Minister Sears should resign from his post for misleading the house. He throw Wilson the financial secretary under the bus. This is however goes deeper than that.

I see the Tribune disable the commenting on their story about the government not having the funds last year to execute the fuel hedges. That is true. Somebody in the Ministry of Finance told me that. The Financial Secretary and the senior technocrats in that ministry decided it was more important to refinance the BPL loan. They were warned by creditors what was going to happen if that loan was not refinanced or BPL defaulted on the loan. That loan had some onerous terms.

What is ironic about his situation is about Dr.Minnis and Marlon Johnson the so called acting financial secretary know about this situation. They created this situation. That is Marlon's method of operation...Take credit for things when they are good and deflect and pretend when things go wrong..This situation is one of the reasons why Dr,.Minnis called an early election. He knew of the many hard decisions that were going to be made.

There needs to be on-going maintenance program on the island of New Providence. Indeed the entire Bahamas.Public buildings, roads, parks, green spaces, road signage and drains need to be maintain regularly. The ministry of works under this PLP government no longer seems to be functioning. They were not doing much before. They are simply worse. Just awful in their performance.
