What the Bahamas needs is a real system of local government. It will allow people to learn how governance works at the local level before they venture on to the national stage. The late Vince Ferguson who taught me at a seminar was a big advocate of that.He told me many of the better american presidents stated out at the local level.Example Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.A former PLP candidate said a Trinidadian cabinet minister told him,he was a local government councillor for about twenty years before he got a nomination to run in the national elections.Politics take time, effort and hard work.Bahamians should ask people like Tony Blair,Gordon Brown ans David Cameron in the UK.They did not wake up one morning ,simply got a nomination and was made a chairman, parliamentary secretary or cabinet minister.
What goes around, comes around. FNM operatives have been using social media for some time to attack and smear people reputations. Now PLP operatives are doing the same thing. He did not speak on these things then.Politics in this country is getting nastier. Dr.Sands himself said politics in the Bahamas is a blood sport.
An us and them mentality has developed here on the island of New Providence.Quite a few persons are living in bubbles. Also many persons have simply become numb and desensitized to the violence on this island.
The minister should apologize. What he said in his budget speech was not true.He simply never bothered to read and find that transaction unfolded. He sholuld apologize to the owners of Western Air who are well -known supporters of the FNM.
What Mr.Maura say he is true. The government has no tax strategy. You see it by how they can reverse so call positions on a dime and the push back from certain sectors.
The Bahamas is a special place where the likes of Marlon Johnson, could parade around as " acting financial secretary." These ideas were started under financial secretaries Rolle and Wilson. They were discontinued by him.Now they are being restarted. Mr.Hartnell won't ask any questions of him. Mr.Hartnell just writes down any thing he says as gospel. Mr.Johnson won't say that after one year he still can't answer the questions posed to him about last year's budget by a former senIor FNM cabinet minister. The journalists in the Bahamas needs to step up their game and do better.
i have not had a chance to have a detailed look over this year's budget. i like the attempt to refit the street lighting. It should reduce the amount of money the government pays to BPL for street lighting The attempt to improve the collection of real property tax was something the FNM government met in place They discontinued it and had to bring it back this fiscal period.Peter Turnquest finally realize there is widespread tax evasion in the Bahamas. That is why he had to recreate the revenue enhancement unit. Those persons were sent home in fall 2017.It was simply a basic budget. Very conservative and nothing special.
My comments had nothing to do with politics as you implied. It had to do with the timing of her appointment,it is weird. Both parties are guilty of this. The problem with people like you is your loyalty to the party is greater than it is to the country.
This is the man who disbanded the revenue enhancement unit.He said it was ineffective.Moody's the debt rating agency made note how that quote and quote ineffective unit collected some ninety million dollars in tax revenue from tax cheats during a six month period.I learn that from an article written by The Tribune business editor Hartnell. Now he realize what they were doing a year later. But he will survive in the Bahamas, like some one said to me,Bahamians don't understand much and have short memories
