While I understand the concept of trying to employ our populace, and encourage industry...if I can import an essential good at $2 , but it gets tagged with a protected tariff...and heaven forbid it is a breadbasket item that gets constrained by price control...let's say I can't put that item to market for $4-$5...the local manufacturer will try to sell that product for say $3.75...so in general terms, the concept of protective tariffs drives up the cost of living. Option A...the consumer gets the item for $2.50-$3.00...option B, protective tariffs, etc, you may end up paying double that as a consumer. Be careful what you wish for.

Super Value has shifted there general markup nearly 10% since the introduction of VAT...the cost of doing business here is extreme. Schaefer was known to 'reprice' items through a third party stateside for import, essentially falsifying invoices. Robin Hood essentially dissolved as this link was being revealed. His one key was he had political connections and investigations were held at bay for as long as possible.

I'm with you on this one...the concept of the Bahamas being a major data centre is scary, between power cuts, internet outages, etc, etc, the idea is laughable at best.

I don't quite think it is complaining per se...I'm thinking it's hopefully taken on board as more of an educational tool, so people can see for themselves that all these great plans that were promised, were rushed and forced into action without the proper due diligence and budgeting. Of course they are getting on with it, but the facade that was put forth was just that, a facade, with no support behind it, in hopes that the masses could be fooled into thinking everything was on a solid foundation.

Why is this person even still employed with a govt. agency??

B_I_D___ says...

A couple screwy things here...ironic that the union is wanting this person removed for a crime he has not been found guilty of...usually it's the other way around, they'll fight for an employee to remain UNTIL proven guilty...but this is part of the problem...you have an alleged sexual predator, so instead of terminating their services, you transfer them into another agency. Something inherently wrong with that scenario, press charges, get the police involved, and terminate them.

...the art of the deal...they were delaying and delaying trying to find the best way to get the best kickback to line their pockets...

Leave VAT alone...reduce customs duties with the aim of eventually eliminating customs duties as promised when VAT was originally discussed!!

B_I_D___ says...

Leave VAT alone...if you make it too damn complicated it will lead to corruption and loopholes as said earlier...instead, let's lower the duty as promised by the previous government and you see the prices come down on the shelf. Cost of living on a whole will drop with the duty going away. Focus on that and leave VAT alone.

Our education system is pathetic...I personally applaud you for your efforts to get back into it for the betterment of your fellow Bahamians. Sadly, they clearly do not want highly qualified educators, maybe because you would start making the lesser educators look bad! The previous government(s) are more than happy to keep rolling out D average students that can be manipulated and downtrodden. Good luck on your new assignment.
