No need to “reconsider” anything here, as this is one “not so Golden” Goose that can not realistically afford to go anywhere else due to proximity and cost of fuel.
The Sponsorship ideas suggested have already been implemented … just attend any major Regatta to see. Reality is this is a “costly” Sport (far more so than a Cricket Bat & Ball it replaced as the National Sport) … in particular “Class A”, where a new Boat with several sets of Sails will cost approx. $200k … and then at least $25k a year to maintain with a single set of Sails (Main & Jib) that have to be replaced every few years costing approx. $12k each. All this for less than 10 hours of usage a year! Unless funded by Government for cultural and touristic reasons, Private Sponsorship is the only alternative, and as such, he who writes the cheque, dictates the terms, albeit there still remain (at least for now) several “unsponsored” Class A Boats, thanks to the financial backing of their wealthy owners.
It would seem we are trying hard to kill yet another Golden Goose … what no one seems to appreciate is that these Mega Wealthy Investors are few and far between and we are very fortunate to have attracted them, as with such extreme wealth, they have options … and more importantly they represent “micro-economies” of their own with their assortment of Yachts, Planes, Cars, etc., all of which require Managers, Trustees, Accountants, Lawyers, Captains, Pilots, Contractors, Landscapers and a myriad of other Staff, all of whom must eat, buy fuel, get their hair cut and otherwise support themselves, whereas the Middle Class is merely a Family Unit, which is by no means the same in terms of basic economic impact, so this should not be a discussion about fairness, rather what is in the best economic interest of the Country.
It is distressing to read such vile negativity upon one’s passing … George, nor any of us are perfect, but he was very accessible and approachable, so all those who have held their tongue for 40 years, only to now vent what they thought of him, are Cowards in the extreme, as there was ample opportunity to say whatever was so vexing to the man’s face … not merely anonymously upon his passing as his Family grieves … rest in peace Brother George … God will forgive you of your sins … just as God “may” perhaps forgive these sad souls for their hypocrisy.
Lyford and Adams are on solid ground here … only question involves integrity of what will soon be a matter for our Judiciary … thankfully we still have the Privy Council.
