Unless we are happy being a Nation of subservient Bell Hops, Maids, Taxi Drivers and Straw Vendors, we better recognize very quickly that we can not survive, yes "survive" on Tourism alone, and if someone wants to invest $5.5 billion into our designated Industrial and most depressed Island, we should be bending over backwards to accommodate them, as trust me, $5.5 billion will make Oban a Friend of virtually every other Nation on the Planet!
Well done licks2, "honest" reporting is all that is required, not sensational scare tactics designed to keep our People in the Dark Ages entailing a life of poverty and crime. The commentary about Pinder's Point is interesting, but irrelevant, as Borco/Buckeye is literally on top of their Settlement … and who sanctioned that, Pindling no less, Father of the Nation. This Site is 35 miles from any sizable population and more importantly right next to an existing Oil Facility … plus it will be built to "current" international best standards and practices as regards safety using the latest in technology, thereby ensuring it is far superior to either of the current Oil Facilities on Grand Bahama.
It would be nice to get some accurate reporting on this Project, as from those who attended, including the Elite Media from Nassau, there were no more than 5 or so opposed out of approx. 200 in attendance. Indeed, contrary to the reporting by the Elite Media from Nassau, who are certainly not worried about putting food on the table for their Families this or any other Evening, there is overwhelming support for this Project among East Enders, so let them decide, as at the end of the day, it is their Island, not Nassau's and they have suffered for far too long.
For a supposed Accountant, this politcal “wanna be one day” has certainly demonstrated extreme ignorance when it comes to Project Fianncing on this level, which is sad for not only Price Waterhouse, his Employer, but also BICA, as it’s President ... although it does explain why he has so much time to pontificate, as those with a better understanding are engaged in the “doing” as opposed to the “wondering”.
There is little substance to be gained from any of these Posts, other than obvious “political” mischief, bias and motives. What should matter is that Grand Bahama is our designated “industrial” Island, no less than 3 Admistrations have approved this Project (including both major Politcal Parties), Grand Bahama is currently in a Depression (not a Recession) and this Project will be next to an existing Oil Facility some 35 miles from the major population centre in Freeport. As for Econoimc Impact, it could be massive in terms of not just employment, but the levels of salaries and opportunities for skilled workers, as let us be honest, there is little reason to teach our Children Science, Chemistry, Engineering, etc., as there currently exist virtually no Job Opportunites available for such skill sets, which means the Brain Drain will continue and regrettably in turn, Crime will continue to increase, as more and more Bahamians struggle to put food on the table for their Families. Clearly none of these considerations are factors for those who oppose this Project, but I can assure you they are for the Average Bahamian.
Now that the Elite Media have extracted a mea culpa out of our PM, can we please now focus on the tremendous economic stimulus that this Project would bring to the much depressed People of the Island of Grand Bahama ... if not, are we in Nassau proposing to declare our designated “industrial” Island in effect Closed for Business, given that this Project neigboirs an existing Oil Facility some 35 miles from Freeport, and in turn, accommodate approx. 50,000 impoverished Grand Bahamians to our already over populated, congested, crime ridden, polluted Rock comprising a mere 19 x 6 miles, not even the 21 x 7 we market to Tourists?!?
Why then did the PLP with Davis as DPM approve the very same Project?!? Presumably they acknowledged that Grand Bahama is historically zoned for industrial development and this Project would go a long way to rejuvenating an otherwise depressed economy in a manner as environmentally sound as reasonably possible by placement of the Faciility next to an existing Oli Terminal at South Riding Point some 35+ miles from Freeport. Indeed, this Facility will be noticeably more environmentally friendly than either of the other 2 existing Oil Terminals on Grand Bahama by virtue of modern technology and will in turn, provide much needed high end employment for young Bahamians who currently have little, if any such prospects. Imagine, our Kids might actually be able to be Scientists, Chemical Engineers, etc. in their own Country, as opposed to bell hops and maids.
Grand Bahama is desperate and we as a Counrry should support “any” investment capable of alleviating decades of recession culminating in outright depression today. Indeed, only the views of Grand Bahamians should be considered, as those that remain are deserving of a return to better days and again, we should support, as opposed to allowing our “Black Crab Mentality” to get the better of us ... yet again.

Not be controversial, but what is “low” paying about Jobs that start at $40k and exceed $200k?!?
