The main benefit of Chapter 11 would have been transparency. All the cards would have been laid on the table for the world to see. Now only a select few know what the hell is going on and use this information to their advantage. In all honesty, I 100% believe that Chapter 11 would have been a much better way forward. Transparency is good for business.
The Government will likely not release any documentation On Baha Mar, until the limitation periods for taking an action have expired. They will just stall and stall.
Also, it seems some Bahamian creditors may have received more than their rightful share. In all honesty, does it seem likely Bahamians were owed 90 million dollars! This seems inflated. I wonder if those who took out bank loans to build out shops put in a claim for the loaned amount and received the full funds and then will continue to retain the lease and shop merchandise when Baha Mar opens. This would mean they could pay back the bank and still own the shop for free!! Something smells about this entire Baha Mar matter.
This is abysmal. When is unfairness ever justified? Imagine if Bahamians in the US were treated this way. They would say it was due to racism. Seriously. This is appalling. Our goverment officials are completely arrogant and oblivious if they think the Bahamas will not suffer ten times worse for their treatment of foreigners this way. What goes around comes around. Just wait and see. The countries who's citizens have been cheated may block tourism and financial services from entering the Bahamas. Christie will be remembered internationally for his terrible prejudice and mismanagement in relation to Baha Mar!
How can there be so many people? A downgrade every month. Junk bond status. BAMSI. Chinese fishing scandal. BOB. VAT money gone! No freedom of information. What kool-aid are these people drinking? Am I alive? Am I a sentient being? I'm beginning to question my own existence. Those must be holograms! Surely Bahamians cannot be that masochistic and perverse. The thought of five more years of Mr. Christie makes me want to jump off a cliff. Yet, these thousand sit so comfortably. This must be the Twilight Zone!
I've never seen such a desperate, half-baked effort by BFSB. When will these people wake up. The rich foreigners are looking at so many different things. It's impossible to say what will fix the Bahamas OFC. Even if they open the Bar, why would the money shift back here? That would not offer a competitive advantage over Cayman and BVI. The Bahamas should be looking for a competitive advantage. If there is none, then get out of the business. My feeling is that it is the fact that our competitors remain British colonies with non corrupt and low crime governments that gives them the edge.
I will state that I have allegiance to no party, only to the Bahamas becoming great again. By far, one of the saddest things I have ever seen is Bahamians still supporting the PLP in mass. The PLP that disobeyed the gaming referedum and kept its people in the bondage of secrecy and zero transparency. The PLP in which corruption ran rife, and in which we were downgraded to junk bond status. How do they still do it? I will probably never understand. What I do know is their supporters must have questionable cognitive abilities. It is impossible for a normally educated person to look at this last five years and speak highly of the party that called the shots. What a mess of a people!!!!
The problem is a huge amount of the Bahamian rental economy is devolving into foreign, non resident hands. Foreigners are buying up all the reasonably priced homes in gated communities to rent to other foreigners living here. They are directly competing with Bahamian landlords. Further, Airbnb allows foreign property owners to compete directly with the hotels. I have 100% no problem with foreigners, but I do think the way they are competing with Bahamians for the white collar tenants is getting out of hand and should be inhibited in some way to rebalance the outflow and erosion of rental proceeds from the country.
